was‘Hope’.Nowin itseighthcycle, 12
photographerswereshortlistedforthe
prize,andallarecurrentlyondisplayat
theV&A’sPorterGallery.
Thecompetitionwasfoundedbythe
PictetGroupin 2008.Onan18-month
cycle,theawardfocusesona themethat
promotesdiscussionanddebateonissues
of sustainability.Thewinner,whothisyear
is IvorianphotographerJoannaChoumali
forherseriesÇavaaller(it willbeok),
takeshomea heftyprizeof 100,
Swissfrancs(about£78,500).
ThePrixPictetexhibitiontoursthe
world,withshowsin over 12 countries,
includingJapan.Theshortlistedimages
arealsopublishedin bookform,with
extensivedocumentationof theworkby
eachof thephotographers,togetherwith
imagesfromthewidergroupof nominees
andessaysbyleadingwritersonthe
themeof theprize.
Diversityandinclusivityis important
toPrixPictet,andassuch,50%of
thenomineesarefemale– something
whichis stillrelativelyunusualamong
photographycompetitions.Nominees
comefrommanydifferentcountries,too,
withrepresentationfromBangladesh,
Victoria and
Albert (V&A)

Overall,thisis a displaywhichshows
greatpoignancy,resilience,determination
- thethemeof Hopeis incrediblyapt.
Consideringthisis a freeexhibition,there
is someextraordinaryworkondisplaythat
can’tfailtoinspireyou– it comesvery
highlyrecommended.
