Step 4
1 Next I added detail to the cottage using
vermilion mixed with yellow for the pan-tiled
roof then added blue to the mix for the grey
tiles. This same colour was used to denote the
timber framing and some of the windows.
2 To complete the painting shadows were
applied to the foreground, which I decided
to bring into the painting from the left.
I mixed the shadow colour from French
ultramarine blue and French vermilion
and washed this colour over the roadway
with a Round squirrel brush.
3 The shadows on the buildings were added
with the same wash then a stronger version
of the same wash was mixed and applied onto
the shadow sides of the trees and bushes.

Step 3
1 After the paper was completely dry,
I added the foliage surrounding the building.
For the distant trees a mix of vermilion and
ultramarine was used to create violet. This
was applied with the side of a No. 8 Round
nylon brush to create the foliage textures.
2 I continued onto the nearer trees, but
changed the wash to a mixture of yellow
and ultramarine, which was darkened in
places with the addition of vermilion.
