101 ⁄ 2 x 101 ⁄ 2 in. (27x27cm).
Finally, I wanted to try
watercolour pencils on a
rough-textured surface so
stretched a piece of
Indian Khadi paper. Dry
colours were scribbled on
the dry paper vigorously
to catch the ruggedness of
the subject then water
was sprayed with an
atomiser to encourage the
colours to run. Ground
colour was also sprinkled
onto the wet surface and
a black watercolour pencil
was used while all was
still wet to delineate the
mountain ranges.

EXERCISE 3
How to use
a paper palette
My sketch of a Kent
church was painted
on Hot-pressed smooth
watercolour paper.
Colours used were:
ochre, yellow, scarlet,
burnt sienna, French
ultramarine, Prussian
blue, spruce, and black.
A palette made up of
thick paper and
scribbled colours was
an extremely useful way
of transporting painting
materials when
I wanted to travel light.

1 Make a dry palette
of heavily scribbled
squares of your colours
on a thick piece of
paper and use it to
create a little landscape.
2 To paint the sky and
land, lift the colours with a wet brush
and drop them onto damp paper,
allowing them to spread as washes.

3 When dry develop the distant
landscape and pond using wet colour
on some of the dry washes.
