To celebrate its centenary, a series of events will take place in

June, along with a painting competition on the theme of ‘Time’.

his year the family-owned Art Shop in Ilkley is celebrating its

100th year. Its story begins in 1919 when local artist, Herbert

Tennant, started the business as a commercial artist, firstly in

the Arcade in Ilkley, before moving to premises in Hawksworth

Street a year later. Returning from active service in 1945, Herbert’s

son, Stanley, continued the business as a poster and signwriter –as

well as making picture frames from a small workshop at the back

of the shop. Expansion in the ‘60s saw a new first floor added and

a complete refurbishment of the shop, including a full range of art

materials and in 1977 Stanley and his wife, Ella were joined by

their son, Tim, who runs the shop today.

The business grew quickly in the ‘80s and ‘90s and saw shops

opening in Skipton, Northallerton and Preston. In 1999 the first Art

Show was held in Ilkley in a church hall, soon expanding to The

Winter Gardens and Kings Hall, and it remains an important

feature of the business to this day. The Skipton and Preston shops

were sold to fund expansion of the Ilkley shop into premises next

door in 2012, enabling a greater range of art materials to be

offered and allowing the picture framing workshop and gallery to

be consolidated within the store. The shop continues to thrive,

providing advice and personal service on a wide range of art

materials from leading brands for the professional and leisure

artists, both online and in store, and Tim says he’s looking forward

to the next 100 years!
