(21Here is the painting before the strawberryOne Last Strawberry,11cm). acrylic, 8^14 ⁄ 41 in 4 ⁄
was added
I drew in the strawberry in and began to underpaint it,initially with cadmium red and orange; I thought fourSTAGE ONE
coats would probably be enough. The brightness of theunderpainting provides a glow to the finishedstrawberry as it shines through the subsequent glazes
To give the strawberry someshape and begin to view it inSTAGE TWO
three dimensions I glazed itwith alizarin crimson andpyrrole red glaze

No two strawberries are the same sostudy the arrangement of the seeds; STAGE THREE
I painted them in with diarylide yellowmixed with white, going over them acouple of times to give strength to the
colour. To give them some shape, whichis time consuming, I used perylenegreen mixed with diarylide yellow

To create the depressions in the strawberry aroundthe seeds I used alizarin and pyrrole red for theSTAGE FOUR
shadows, with alizarin on its own for the darkestareas with perhaps just a touch of dioxazine purple– be careful when you do this, it’s a strong pigment
and you only need a little

Having found the shadows the next stepwas to find the light to create theSTAGE FIVE
impression of each depression. I bringback the cadmium orange with perhaps atouch of cadmium red and, where
necessary, Winsor & Newton mixing whiteto lighten it just a little. I never tire ofextolling the virtues of this marvellous
pigment, a super transparent white –make sure you have it in your acrylic box

Tim’s tips:Use a black box or curtain Have the background ready
Draw outlines precisely Be selective Use Small brushes
Use a mirror Have a damp tissue handy

Next I had to select those shiny areas thatthe light from my studio window was pickingSTAGE SIX
out – these are what make it a proper, juicystrawberry. A good strong white is neededhere, and I have found that Liquitex soft
body acrylic is the densest; I buy thisparticular white in tubs because I use somuch of it

Lastly I painted the stalk and leaves. Perylenegreen, chrome oxide green, transparentSTAGE SEVEN
yellow iron oxide were mixed with white anddiarylide yellow were used here; I picked outthe light that shines through some of the
leaves with a yellow glaze, and the tiny hairson the stalk with a whitish-green mix. It’slittle observations like this that complete the
illusion. Six hours of solid work on onestrawberry

What a difference now the painting has a strawberry in itOne Last Strawberry,acrylic on HP watercolour paper, 8⁄ 4 141 ⁄ 4 in (2111cm).
