BEST IN SHOWPAINTINGS

If you would like to see your art group’s winning paintings
reproduced here, encourage visitors to your next exhibition to
vote for their favourite work. At the end of the show, simply send
us the details and we’ll do our best to include all paintings
received. Full details are given opposite

Broadstone Art Society
Dee Cowell’s work (below right) received first place in the ‘most innovative’ category at the recent Broadstone Art Society
exhibition. Judged by professional artist, Diane Roberts, she explains that she was drawn to the work by its ‘edgy action
mark making, that gave a visual expression of unsettling consequences’. The title tells us that the seas are in peril so Diane
felt that there was an effect both emotionally and visually. Second place went to Chris Gavin for his untitled work based on
in situsketches of Exmoor; and third place went to Margarete Tucknott’s for her oil and cold wax painting, First Morning(not
pictured). The Worth Cup was presented to Jeff Bradley for his painting, Gathering Storm(below left), voted most popular
painting in the exhibition by the visiting public. For more information about the society visit http://www.broadstoneartsociety.org

Altrincham Society of Artists
Mary Atherton Time to Head Home,
acrylic, 16x16in. (40.5x40.5cm).
Mary’s painting depicts the clock
tower in Altrincham. The society was
established in 1937 and has its own
studio, which any of its 170-plus
members can use any day of the
week. There are informal paintings
sessions throughout the week, an
annual programme of workshops
and demonstrations, and a short
painting break each year; http://www.
