‘I am a painter living in the Cornish
fishing village of Newlyn and specialise
primarily in soft pastel seascapes and
landscapes, in both the studio and en
plein airwhen the weather is
accommodating. Promoting this medium
is somewhat of a personal crusade, as I
have written a number of articles for The
Artistmagazine, been featured in various
publications here and in the USA, and
teach and demonstrate soft pastel
painting.R
ichard Suckling’s joyous painting, Godolphin Summer Beds, captures all the heat

of early summer flowerbeds in the
garden of the National Trust’s Godolphin
House in Cornwall. The day I visited was
not ideal for sketching outdoors, with
wind and occasional downpours, but the
colours were beautifully vivid in between
the showers and allowed for quick pencil
sketches, photos and notes. The painting
was completed in the studio, using this
information as a starting point, but
endeavouring to keep it free.‘The composition was softly blocked in
on Sennelier La Carte pastel card, using a
mix of Unison, Sennelier and Girault soft
pastels. This gave me the opportunity to
play with colour and tone, creating an
impression of the scene while keeping it
loose and understated. I blocked in the
darks first, moving to the mid-tones and
finishing with the juicy highlights. It’s
tricky deciding at which point you have
said enough without overworking the
painting, but so satisfying when you get
it right.’
