Preferences
and switching
Display the current app’s
preferences by pressing ç
(Command) and comma. Quickly
switch between open apps by
holding ç and pressing †.

New windows
and tabs
ç+N creates a new window,
ç+T creates a new tab. ç+W
closes the open window. In Finder
ç+†+N creates a new folder;
in Safari it makes a new Private
Browsing window.

Editing
In Mail, ç+†+V pastes
text as a quotation and ç+K
adds a link. In apps such as Pages,
ç+ß+å+V pastes text while
matching the style of the section
you’re pasting it into.

Standard folders
Finder has some handy
navigation shortcuts: Go
to the desktop with ç+ß+D,
Applications with ç+ß+A,
Documents with ç+ß+O and
recents with ç+ß+F.

Instant emoji
Need to add an emoji in a
hurry? ç+≈+[Space bar]
brings up the emoji keyboard.

Quick search
You know about ç+[Space
bar] for Spotlight but if you
also press å it opens up a new
Finder window instead of the
Spotlight interface.

Easy screenshots
Take screenshots with
ç+ß+ 3 for full screen,
4 for selected region - handy
for grabbing things from social
media) or 4 +[Space bar] for the
selected window.

Add other keyboards
If you want to use multiple keyboard
languages and layouts, go to the Input
Sources tab to set up multiple keyboards
for the same Mac. You can also set up
Bluetooth keyboards here.

Get dictating
The dictation in macOS is genuinely
brilliant, and you can enable it in the
Dictation tab here. The default shortcut
to activate it is to press ƒ or ç twice,
but you can create your own shortcut.

Keyboard quick-tips

apply one or more tags to something, so
for example you might tag a document
as a work file and tag it with a particular
project name too. You can edit tags and
create new ones in Finder’s Preferences.

Edit Extensions
The Extensions preference pane
enables you to adjust the options that
appear when you click on the Share
button. You’ll often find that third-party
apps have a tendency to add themselves
in here, and you can disable them again
by unticking them. If you have apps
that integrate with the Finder, such
as Dropbox or OneDrive, you can

disable ones you don’t want in the Finder
Extensions section.

Take a look at Today
The Today section specifies which
apps get to appear in the Today view of
the Notifications panel, and you can
disable the ones you don’t want – so, for
example, we’d rather see the Fantastical
widget than the macOS Calendar one, so
we’ve changed that. We’ve found it’s quite
handy to have the Calculator in there too.
Whether you’re changing the Finder
actions, the Today view or the Share
sheet, you can re-order items by dragging
and dropping them.
