Aimed at creative pros,

Apple’s high-end desktop

has always been designed

to deliver as much power

and flexibility as possible.

Ironically, the previous ‘trash

can’ Mac Pro proved to be a

design dead-end, and so Apple

came up with this – a stainless

steel and aluminium tower that’s

almost infinitely configurable –

you can even add wheels if

you want to.

While Apple’s yet to confirm

UK prices, we do know it’s not

going to be cheap, thanks to an

extensive configuration list that

ranges from a choice of 8-core to

28-core Intel Xeon W processors,

offers up to 1.5TB of RAM and up

to 4TB of SSD storage. You can

also fit up to four AMD Radeon

Vega II Duo graphics cards and/

or an AfterBurner ProRes and

ProRes RAW accelerator card.

Apple updated its MacBook Pro range in

July 2019, replacing the entry-level 13in

non-Touch Bar model, with a Touch Bar-

equipped replacement, while also slashing

£150 off the asking price. Other changes

to the entry-level 13in include the addition of

a quad-core, eighth-generation Intel Core i5

processor, making the new MacBook Pro

twice as powerful as the model it replaces.

The new 13in also benefits from Touch ID, a

True Tone display and Apple’s T2 security

chip. However, Apple has halved the amount

of SSD storage from 256GB to 128GB, which

feels like a retrograde step.

The rest of the MacBook Pro line-up

remains unchanged from last year. Mid-

range and high-end 13in models come

with quad-core, eighth-gen Intel Core i5

processors, with quad-core, eighth-gen Core

i7s available as build-to-order options. Both

15in MacBook Pros up the ante with ninth-

gen Intel Core i7s, although the top-end

model benefits from an eight-core CPU.

The top 15in model can also be kitted out

with an AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics

chip, adding serious graphical power.

As well as Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11ac

Wi-Fi, all MacBook Pro models come with

Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) for connectivity –

13in MacBook Pros get two ports – both of

which are on the left-hand side of the device;

15in Pros get four Thunderbolt 3 ports for

even more flexbility.

Apple offers an extensive list of build-

to-order options for the Mac Pro beyond

processor and GPU upgrades. You can add

up to 32GB of RAM and up to 4TB of SSD

storage – although the options aren’t cheap.

The new Mac Pro has

been designed to be as

configurable as possible.

All MacBook Pros come

with Retina displays and

Apple’s Touch Bar tech.
