Our Apprentice joins master fine-art photographer
Neil Burnell on a drab day, the ideal conditions for
shooting minimalist monochrome seascapes
t’s a common misconception that landscape
photography requires fine weather. Ask this month’s
pro, Neil Burnell, and he’ll tell you it’s subjective. In fact,
this very shoot was postponed due to blue skies! As Neil
puts it: “On a bright day you might shoot at the blue hour
and maybe the golden hour, and then you’d go home.”
For moody minimalist seascapes, it has to be cloudy, and as our
intrepid Apprentice, Sally Holmes, arrived at Babbacombe Beach,
Devon, the sky was playing its part. It was dry and grey, with light
breaking through the clouds intermittently. Neil was keen to shoot at
high tide, leaving just enough time for a warming cuppa in the nearby
Cary Arms, where the conversation soon turned to photography.
