we had planned the walk around. The
contrast in light was an amazing sight
to behold, and I was able to capture a
moment I’ll never forget.
I had seen bioluminescent plankton on
Penmon Point Beach at the very beginning
of my photography journey and made a
pig’s ear of the photo. I continued to see
the incredible natural event most years,
but it was never as concentrated as on
that first night. As a result, it became my
mission to capture this strange natural
phenomenon again, but with several years
of experience behind me. I journeyed to
the spot every night for nearly four weeks,
and my patience eventually paid off – a
large bloom crashed against rocks on
the beach. The result is one of the most
rewarding photos I have ever taken [3].
I have been going to Llanddwyn Island
for many years and nothing excites me
more than capturing the Milky Way, which
aligns nicely behind the old lighthouse [4].
This is a five-shot image. Four images
were stacked for the sky and blended
with an image of the foreground.
I wanted to catch the heather that
grows on the cliffs of South Stack island
for some time, but always managed to
miss the season. This year I made a vow to
visit the location at its peak. I had visited
this spot several times before, but without
the heather. I finally managed to capture it
in my latest image [5].

this fine composite were
all shot on the same night.

was Gareth able to capture
the heather-covered cliffs
in their prime.
