A question of focus
In N-Photo 101, in Ask
Matthew, he provides advice
to reader Bill Kominsky for
photographing birds with the
Z 7 regarding the use of AF-C
combined with Auto-area AF
using the targeting reticule.
Thanks for the response to
Bill’s question, next time I
plan a trip to RSPB I’ll give the
Auto-area reticule another go
- I found it a tad confusing
first time out.
These shots were taken at
RSPB Bempton which, while
taken using AF-C, were either
with large or small Wide-area
AF mode. As this was the first
time I’d (a) been to Bempton,
(b) tried photographing birds
and (c) used a rented Sigma
150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 | C
lens with my Nikon Z 6, I have
to say that I was really
pleased with the results!
Perhaps gannets are easier
to photograph, especially
when they surf the cliff face.
I’m loving my Nikon Z 6,
which has replaced ye olde
worlde Canon EOS 400D.
Regarding the new
magazine format... For
me fewer photos from
‘Landscape Photo of the Year’
and similar awards, and more
on ‘how to’ articles.

Nifty Z 50
I am currently a Fujifilm X-T3
and Panasonic MFT user, but
am likely to buy the Nikon
Z 50 when it’s available.
I have read most of the
preproduction reviews on
the Z 50 and I do wonder
what people expect at this
price point? One criticism I’ve
seen is of the down-pivoting
screen that allows for
vlogging and selfies. For
myself I think this is a novel
approach, but I appreciate
that mounting on a tripod or
other device renders the
function quite restrictive.
All I would say is just use an
L- bracket on a ball head
tripod – issue resolved!

We’re keen to welcome you to
the N-Photo family, Fergus!
We’ll be reviewing the Z 50 in
N-Photo 107, so stay tuned!
Elusive Lemur
Sorry to be dim, but I have
been trying to download the
free version of Photolemur
that came with N-Photo issue
- When I put the web
address https://skylum.
com/l/nphoto-photolemur
into my browser I get a ‘page
not found’ message.
If I put it into a search
engine and go to the site
it asks me to login but, of
course, I have not been
emailed the password.

We have had many similar
queries. It’s not the number
‘1’, nor is it an upper-case ‘i’,
but a lower-case ‘L’ that
comes after the ‘.com’ bit.
We must admit the supplied
web address is a bit unwieldy,
so to make things easier,
we’ve created a shortlink:
http://bit.ly/np-pl which will
take you straight there.
If you haven’t downloaded
this ace software, you have
until 31 December 2019 to get
your free copy!
Fergus has been tempted away
from his current mirrorless by
the impressive Nikon Z 50.
Nigel is pleased with his
results from the Z 6 after
moving on from ye olde Canon.
