Giving your kids a bedroom that
they’ll both love — especially after
a move — will get them excited
about their new home and sharing a space.
Traditionally when decorating a child’s
room we base choices on age but here I’d
suggest an enduring camp-style decor that
doesn’t skew too young and will be easy to
update as they grow. The walls are already a
perfect grey-green that works well with the
warm wood floor. For an updated cosy look
paint your baseboards doors and door trim
the same shade in a satin finish.
Taking cues from the Inspiration shot
opt for twin beds — they don’t need to
match if they have the same wood tone.
Otherwise a pair of matching iron-framed
beds from Crate & Barrel f lanking a sturdy
wood dresser like this one from Pier 1
Imports will create a similarly charming
focal point. Layer the beds with relaxed
bedding: cheery ticking-stripe sheets from
Serena & Lily woolly blankets from
Pendleton and patterned indigo pillows

from Pine Cone Hill. The bedding doesn’t
have to match either — just stick to natural
hues with the same intensity. Laissez-faire
fabrics that look fine rumpled are easy for
kids to maintain and feel fresh and fun.
For a dash of bright colour add a yellow
task lamp by Schoolhouse Electric & Supply
Co. for each boy on the dresser then hang a
framed print or poster over each bed (be
sure the frames are the same size for a
symmetrical look). I love how this modern
deer print by Sharon Montrose in its clean
white frame contrasts the more rustic vibe
of the bedding. Let your boys select their
own art to ref lect their style: it’s a great way
to involve them in their new bedroom and
put a personal stamp on the space.

We recently moved
to a smaller house so
our boys 4 and 9 will
share a bedroom. We
love the wide-plank
wood floors but may
start fresh with the
furnishings. What will
work for both ages?
