Foolproof Ride Hack
Ride with someone who’s better,
faster, and more knowledgeable
about bikes and gear than you
are. You’ll work harder, learn
more, and be in good hands if
something happens.

MY BICYCLING LIFE
EXPERT HACKS, GEAR RECS & BIKE-TESTED WISDOM FROM OUR STAFF
1 /
Pro 1 Force $5,
The nicest bike I’ve
ever ridden but unin-
timidating. It’s super
light, small, and very
comfortable.
sedan.
BEST
MONEY I
EVER
SPENT
I recently splurged on a
Rapha kit—full disclosure,
most of it was on sale.
But now I fully understand
why so many cyclists
exclusively wear their gear.
The fit is nice, the materi-
als are durable, and the
design is sleek.
I hate them
but they work—
step-ups. And
squats. Although I
don’t mind squats.
THE WORST
RIDE OF MY
LIFE...
The first (and last) Five Boro Bike Tour I did
a few years ago. Rain, cold, wind—a friend
blew a tire, twice. Mud and dir t ever y where.
We rode until finally bailing just before the
BQE. We dragged our muddy bikes and cold,
wet selves onto the subway. I was shivering
for days.
...THE GREATEST
RIDE OF MY LIFE
A recent group lunch ride with a dozen co-
workers. I don’t usually ride in groups and
expected it to be chaotic, but it was relaxed,
and everyone—all at different levels—had a
good time.
When I’m not revisiting
Nas’s “Illmatic” for the
7000th time? “Don’t Leave
Me Lonely” by Mark Ronson
feat. YEBBA, on repeat.
Cycling (and many other sports)
needs to be more inclusive and
diverse, especially when it comes
to elites and pros. I think it’s
happening, but slowly.
