I

’m away at my parents’
house in Leeds doing the
pre-Christmas madness
visit. I’ve made dinner,
done bath time and
wrangled two resistant
children into bed. I’m
about to settle down with a good
book at the grand bedtime of 9pm
when a message flashes up on my
phone: ‘If the cleaner’s coming
tomorrow, where are the sheets?’
texts my partner, Steven. To put
this into context, we live in a
1,000sq ft flat in London; there
really aren’t that many places to
hide some sheets. ‘Under Betty’s
bed,’ I type. ‘Which ones should
I put out?’ he replies. I take
a deep breath...
