he statistics make for pretty grim reading: returning
riders are high-risk riders, and it isn’t an ageist thing.
Actually, if you’re aged between 40 and 60 then you’re at
a higher risk of crashing than younger riders. Probably
because there are more of you on bikes. Throw a returning
rider in the mix, who might be getting back on a bike after
three or even 30 years – and often on a heavier and hugely more
powerful bike than they were used to – and the risks rise again.
But with risks come rewards in motorcycling, so we obviously
want to minimise the former and maximise the latter. So how do
we do that? Some of that is fairly obvious such as wearing quality
riding gear as is ensuring your machine is mechanically sound
with good tyres, brakes and suspension, for example.
