Prefixes
A “prefix” is a
group of letters
placed at the
beginning
of a word to
change its
meaning. Our
text contains
a number of
verbs with
prefixes,
for example
“dismantle”,
“reassemble”,
“declutter” and
“unload”. Other
common verb
prefixes are
co-, inter-,
mis-, over-,
pre-, trans-
and under-.


  1. Find the idioms


Take another look at the text on page 49. Find the idiomatic words and phrases
that can replace the highlighted expressions in the sentences below.

A. Can you help me with those boxes, please? They’re too heavy for me.

B. I’m lost without my checklist, so I always make sure it is close enough to be
available at all times.
