The Inquisition arrived in Barcelona in
1487, taking up residence in a part of the
14th-century, Gothic-style Grand Royal
Palace. A year later, the first executions
for heresy took place here. The
condemned were garroted in the square
and their bodies burned on the outskirts
of the city.
