Sisi fell in love with Corfu
following her first visit to
the island in 1861. In 1890,
when she was in her 50s,
she again took refuge on
the island, completing this
white-marble summer
palace overlooking the
city of Corfu. Taking its
inspiration from the Greek
hero Achilles, it was named
the Achilleion.
