DEATHS

JOHNKASTNER

Internationally-renowned Canadian
documentarian, died at home
Thursdaynight, November 21, 2019
in the arms of his loving partner
Susan Teskey. The world has lost
a unique, brilliant and profoundly
humanist documentary voice; we
have lost our unique most loving,
funny, devoted, irreplaceable partner,
father, grandfather, uncle, brother.
The third of the privileged children
of joyous creators Martin and Rose
Kastner,winnerofanunprecedented
four Emmys and innumerable other
international awards during his five-
decade career, John produced a
body of work that touched hearts
and shook preconceptions and
policies in medical and legal fields,
most particularly with his recent
series of films about mental health.
His range was prodigious, from the
most comic to most moving; he
took his work seriously but never
himself - despite his enormous
success as a filmmaker, he dreamed
of returning to his first love, acting.
Forever grieved by his partner Susan
Teskey, children Danny (Christine),
Gabe and Kira; grandchildren Laila
and Theo, nephew Jamie and wife
Laura, great-nephew Max, nieces
Jessika and Julie, and sisters Susan
and Kathy and brother-in-law
Marvin. And, those whose lives he
touched and altered in his films and
with whom he had relationships
going back decades. Predeceased
by his parents, his dear wife Renee,
mother of their children; and by his
brother Peter. Funeral arrangements
are private; a remembrance and
celebration of his exceptional life will
be announced later.

DEATHS

JEFFREY KIRKLAND
March 25, 1968 -
Toronto, Ontario
November 16, 2019 -
Calgary, Alberta

Jeffrey Ian Kirkland, beloved
husband of Sandi Kirkland (nee
Dunn) of Calgary, Alberta, passed
away on Saturday, November 16,
2019 after a courageous battle
with cancer.
Jeff was born in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada on March 25, 1968. He
graduated from Athabasca
University with a degree in
Business Administration. He
married his soulmate, Sandi
in 2007. Jeff loved spending
time with his family. Walking
around the neighbourhood and
exploring new locales was a fun
and frequent family pastime. His
son, Tyler James (TJ), was his
pride and joy. The ‘boys’ were
often seen enjoying ice cream
and McDonalds dates together.
Jeff also had great affection for
his pugs, Tyson and Daisy, and
was excited with the recent
addition of their Bernedoodle,
Maverick, to the family. Jeff also
enjoyed travelling. Many precious
memories were made in various
sunny destinations. An avid
runner for many years he would
wake up at 5:00 a.m. to hit the
treadmill before heading into
work. On weekends, he would
often run a half marathon on the
trails around the family cottage.
Jeff was dedicated to the Terry
Fox Foundation and actively
participated in the run for 10 years,
raising over $200,000 for cancer
research. People would joke that
Jeff ‘bled’ Coke. In part, that may
havebeenduetothelargeamount
of Coke Zero he consumed.
Really, it was because of his
unwavering commitment and
passion to his work at Coca-Cola
Canada - where he devoted his
entire career of thirty-two years.
Besides his loving wife, Jeff is
survived by his son Tyler James
(TJ) Kirkland of Calgary, AB; Jeff
is also survived by his mother
Joanne Kirkland of Vancouver,
BC; his brother Graeme Kirkland
of Toronto, ON; father-in-law
and mother-in-law, David and
Patricia Dunn of Three Hills, AB;
brother-in-law and sister-in-law,
Matthew and Pam Engquist (niece
Olivia and nephew Nathaniel)
of Calgary, AB; brother-in-law
and sister-in-law, Colin and
Debi Peterson (niece-Emilee)of
Three Hills, AB; as well as many
cousins and friends. Jeffrey
was predeceased by his father
Robert Kirkland of Nelson, BC.

DEATHS

GRACE DORISMUNCASTER
(Rodwell)
1934 – 2019

Grace passed away peacefully and
comfortably at home in Toronto
on November 18th. She is survived
by her sons Bob (Leanne), Bernie
(Michelle), her five grandchildren
Matthew, Graham and Emma and
Craig and Sean, her sister, Bernice
Lepper and also by her nephew
and five nieces , Rick Rodwell,
Peggy Guay and Wendy Barlow
and Cathy Hitchcock, Peggy
Lepper and Pat Lepper. She was
predeceased by her parents,
Jennie and Richard Rodwell
and her siblings Jennie Barlow
and Thomas Rodwell, as well as
daughter-in-law Diana Rankin.
Grace grew up in downtown
Toronto and attended Brant
Street Public School and Jarvis
Collegiate. She then pursued a
nursing career, graduating from
Sudbury’s St. Elizabeth’s School
of Nursing in 1955 and obtaining
a Certificate in Operating Room
Technique from Cook County
School of Nursing in Chicago in

  1. Following her training, Grace
    performed surgical room nursing
    in hospitals in Sudburyfor a
    number of years.
Grace then focused on what gave
her the greatest joy and meaning-
    -raising her two sons, being
intimately involved in the lives of
her nieces and nephew and more
    recently dedicating herself to her
    five grandchildren. In particular,
    Grandma Grace was instrumental
    in raising and helping Matthew,
Graham and Emma after they lost
their mother, in 2006. Craig and
Sean also had the benefit of many
    wonderful times with Grandma
    sharing her love of travel.
    Grace did everythinginher life
    with great energy, focus and
    determination. She combined
    those qualities with kindness and
nurturing as a parent, aunt and
    grandparent. Grace had many
    close and life-long friends (and
the children of those friends). She
    visited them frequently. Always
    closely followed by her miniature
    dachshunds, Grace would pretty
    much always arrive with her
    signature bran muffins, port jelly
    and chicken liver pate.
    Once her sons reached high
    school age, Grace focused more
of her passion for service outside
    the home. She obtained a
    Bachelor of Independent Studies
    from Waterloo University in 1978
    and a Masters in Organizational
    Development/ Counselling from
    Goddard College in Vermont
in 1979. Her volunteer life then
began in earnest. She was on
the Board of Directors of each of
    St. Christopher House, Central
    Neighbourhood House and
    the Canadian Cancer Society,
    an Executive of the Toronto
    Association of Neighbourhood
    Services and was extremely
involved in the Meals on Wheels
Program. Grace was also a Master
    Gardener tour guide at Edwards
    Gardens for 15 years.
    Grace was an adventuresome
    traveller who visited all seven
    continents (including Antarctica)
    before many of her destinations
    were commonly accessible.
    Always active and in excellent
    physical condition, Grace was a
    tireless swimmer and walker as
well as a practitioner of Tai Chi.
Many of her good friends and
family were with her at Caledon
    Ski Club every Wednesday and
    Saturday during the ski season.
Grace dealt with the journey of
    dementia with dignity and, true
to her name, grace. Her inherent
    character was apparent even in
the late stages of the disease,
    when she would constantly
    compliment and ask after other
residents and the staff where she
    resided. Grace’s family is grateful
    for the incredibly compassionate
    care she received at the
    Leaside Retirement Residence -
    particularly once she was resident
on the second floor. We also
    thank Danuta Sinclair for her
    devotion and attention to Grace’s
    needs in her later stages.
A Celebration of Life has been
    planned at Calvin Presbyterian
    Church, 26 Delisle Ave., Toronto,
    on Saturday December 28th at
    11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family
    requests that donations be
    directed to St. Christopher House,
    Toronto or Hope for Dementia.

DEATHS

AISHA TARA UMAR

Passed away on Saturday,
November 23, 2019 at Bridgepoint
Hospital in Toronto, ON. Born
October 29, 1969 in Lahore,
Pakistan; she is survived by her
beloved daughter Yasmin Tara
Umar, and her parents Kishwar
and Pervez Umar. The family
immigrated to Canada when
Aisha was three years old and
she lived variously in Montreal,
Calgary, and the Toronto area.
Aisha excelled at the Strathcona-
Tweedsmuir School in Calgary,
then at a BA at the University of

inspiring presence. She had a
fundamental belief that the world
is there to be lived to its fullest,
and with many possibilities to be
explored. She possessed a zest
for life, with the finest blendof
mischief and adventure, believing
that things were put in frontof us
to grab hold of and experience.
And she believed in the strength
and power of a community, in
all its diversity, and that together
we could do anything; and often
reminding us by saying “We’ve
got this...” Aisha was a great
friend and partner, both at work
or at play, and those who had
the joy of having her in their life
always felt the encouragement
and support she provided. She
also genuinely cared much for
others, and protective of those
she believed in. The fiercest
love of all was dedicated to her
daughter Yasmin.
Aisha displayed great courage,
determination, and perseverance
especially in her battle against the
cancer which finally took her from
this Earth just past her fiftieth
year. A special thank you to the
doctors, nurses, and staffs of Mt.
Sinai Hospital, Princess Margaret
Hospital, Toronto General
Hospital, and Bridgepoint Hospital
