PLAY CLAUS FOR A CAUSE

Pick an issue that tugs at your heartstrings, then be a part of

the solution this holiday season

KEEPING PETS

WITH FAMILIES

Up to 48% of domestic violence

victims stay in abusive relationships

because they don’t want to leave

their pets — but only about 10% of

shelters accept animals.

Purina partnered with the nonprofit

RedRover to form the Purple Leash

Project and pledged more than

$500,000 toward grants to help

ensure that there will be at least

one pet-friendly shelter in each

state by the end of 2020.

BE A SANTA’S HELPER

Do the Take the Lead Challenge:

Pledge $5 per month for a year

or make one $60 donation at

purpleleashproject.com to get

an official leash. Post your pet’s

photo with #purpleleashproject

on social media and tag three

friends to do the same.

SAVING

CATS’ LIVES

More cats are euthanized in shelters

than any other species.

Alley Cat Allies helps shelters

and community advocates establish

programs including trap-neuter-

return, an effective and humane

method of reducing shelter

intake. It also supports disaster

response, vaccination, foster

care programs and more.

BE A SANTA’S HELPER

Visit Alley Cat Allies’ 2019

Holiday Cat-a-log (alleycat.org

/holidaycatalog2019) to read

the stories of cats in need and

sponsor a cat for trap-neuter-return,

emergency surgery, microchipping

or other needs. Donation levels

start at $30 and can be directed to

whichever initiative you choose.

CURING CANINE

CANCER

One in three dogs will develop

cancer during his or her life,

which leaves a paw-shaped hole

in many families.

The initiatives of the National

Canine Cancer Foundation

(NCCF) educate pet owners about

cancer prevention and detection

and help fund research into

more accurate and cost-effective

diagnostic methods.

BE A SANTA’S HELPER

Purchase one of NCCF’s handmade

personalized ornaments ($25,

wearethecure.org) by Christmas

Eve: All proceeds go toward finding

a cure. Check your dog for lumps on

the 14th of every month and tag

@nationalcaninecancerfoundation

to raise awareness on social media.

RESCUING LAB

ANIMALS

Each year, an estimated 70,000

dogs are used in laboratory

experiments in the U.S. alone.

Since 2010, the Beagle Freedom

Project (BFP) has saved more than

2,000 of them from labs in 30 states

and 10 countries. The organization

strives to end cruelty to and testing

on animals through education,

outreach and lobbying efforts.

BE A SANTA’S HELPER

Give a BFP-rescued lab animal

a new identity: For donations

starting at $500 at bfp.org, holiday

sponsors get to name a rescued

animal and receive a video of its lab

tag or tattoo being removed. And

whenever you shop, avoid products

tested on animals by using BFP’s

Cruelty Cutter app.
