Iraqis in the streets
A teargassed protester receives help on Oct. 28 in Baghdad’s
Tahrir Square, the epicenter of Iraq’s largest antigovernment
protests since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. First called to
decry high unemployment and corruption, the demonstrations
swelled after government forces killed nearly 150 marchers in
early October. The larger crowds chanted against the political
system put in place under the U.S. occupation and the heavy
influence of Iran in governance since. As Prime Minister Adel
Abdul-Mahdi reportedly promised to step down and the death
count passed 250, the protests continued.
