INCAMERASTOCK/ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

This poster of a woman
flexing her muscles appeared
in Westinghouse factories for
two weeks in 1943. It’s thought
to be based on a photo of a
worker in the machine shop at
the Naval Air Station in Ala-
meda, California, one of more
than 300,000 women who
worked in the aircraft industry
during World War II. It was not
until the 1980s that it became
popular as an image of femi-
nist empowerment.
