New cars: whatthe critics say

T

And for those who
have everything...

NissanJuke
from£17,395

Autocar
The firstNissan Juke,
launchednine years ago,
was aproblematic car.Its
distinctive design gainedit
as manyenemies asit did
fans, the slopingroofline
made it cramped,andthe
ride wasstiff.However, its
quirkylooks meantit sold
well,particularly in the
UK.Now,though,with a
new engine, smootherride
andabetterinterior,it
may really be co mpetitive
in what isacrowded class
of small crossovers.

What Car?
TheJuke’snaturally
aspirated 1.6-litre engi ne
hasbeenreplacedbya
1.0-litre turbo petrol one
with 115bhp.It’s the only
optiononoffersof ar, but
aplug-inhybridversion
is likely to come later. It’s
not the mostpowerful
engine in this class, but
it’l ldo, andthe handling
is truly impressive. The
ride is more comfortable
than it was,but it’slikely
best if youchoose the
smaller wheels.

The DailyTelegraph
If ever therewas a
“marmite car”,the original
Juke, with its “googly eyes,
chubby cheeks and bulging
haunches”,was it. That
design largely remains, but
its interior has gone from
“cheap”todownright
“upmarket”. There’s also
much morespaceinside,
andthe boot has swelled
by 20%to 422litres.
TheJukehas “in onefell
swoop” gonefrombeing
“the worsttoone of the
best cars Nissan makes”.

●You’llneedapacket of chewing gum
(preferably strips),abattery andapair of
scissors–thoughneat tearing might work.
●Chewing gum usually comes wrapped in
apaper-backed foil, which is what you
need. You’ll most likely wantafew pieces
to test the technique several times.
●Carefully cut or tear the foil wrapper into
ashape with two fat ends andathin strip in
the middle–like an elongated sand timer.
●The electricity inabattery is enough to
set just the narrow part of the paper on fire.
●Assemble something flammable, like a
shred of tissue paper, newspaper orasmall
piece of firelighter, to set alight with the
quick burst of flame you should get.
●Attach one end of your piece of foil to one
terminal of the battery, put it in position
next to your flammable material, and touch
the second end to the other terminal.
●Alternatively, try rubbingabit of wire
wool (likeapiece of Brillopad) across the
terminals ofa9Vbattery forthe same effect.
