Standings have been arranged to reflect how the teams will be
determined for the playoffs. Teams are ranked 1-15 by record. Divi-
sion standing no longer has any bearing on the rankings. The top
eight teams in each conference make the playoffs, and the top-
seeded team would play the eighth-seeded team, the seventh team
would play the second, etc. Head-to-head competition is the first of
several tiebreakers, followed by conference record. (Western Confer-
ence divisions: S-Southwest; P-Pacific; N-Northwest; Eastern Con-
ference divisions: A-Atlantic; C-Central; S-Southeast).

STANDINGS

Taurean Prince had 27 points
and 12 rebounds, and the host
Brooklyn Nets slowed down James
Harden and the Houston Rockets
in a 123-116 victory Friday night.
Two nights after scoring a fran-
chise-record 159 points in a victory
at Washington, the Rockets
couldn’t get nearly enough shots to
drop after opening an early 15-
point lead. They went 12 for 48 from
three-point range, with Harden a
dismal two for 16.
“I had a lot of opportunities,”
Harden said. “The three-ball
hasn’t been going for me but I’m
just going to continue to shoot. I
was here yesterday, this morning
was here shooting so I’m not wor-
ried about it.”
Harden finished with 36 points
and eight assists, but he was 10 for
31 from the field. Russell West-
brook added 27 points, eight as-
sists and seven rebounds.
Harden came in leading the
NBA at 36.8 points per game, and
scored 59 on Wednesday. Kyrie Ir-
ving came in at 35.3 per game and
had scored at least 26 in all four
games, and finished with 22.

at Boston 104, New York 102:
Jayson Tatum hit a turnaround
jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining
and the Celtics posted their fourth
straight victory.

Milwaukee 123, at Orlando 91:Gi-
annis Antetokounmpo had 29
points and 14 rebounds as the
Bucks routed the Magic. Eric Bled-
soe added 18 points, six rebounds
and six assists for Milwaukee.

at Chicago 112, Detroit 106:Zach
LaVine scored 26 points, Otto
Porter Jr. added 22 and the Bulls
overcame a big effort by Derrick
Rose against his former team.

at Indiana 102, Cleveland 95:Mal-
colm Brogdon had 25 points, eight
rebounds and six assists to help
the injury-depleted Pacers beat
the Cavaliers for their first home
victory of the season.

San Antonio 127, at Golden State
110 :Patty Mills scored 31 points off
the bench and LaMarcus Aldridge
added 22 points and eight re-
bounds as the Spurs routed the
Warriors, who played their first
game without Stephen Curry.

at Sacramento 102, Utah 101:Har-
rison Barnes scored on an offensive
rebound with 2.9 seconds remain-
ing after Nemanja Bjelica’s missed
three-pointer as the Kings won
their first game of the season.

DALLAS — The sea-
soned bull and the young li-
on went toe-to-toe Friday
night at American Airlines
Center, the Lakers’ LeBron
James and Dallas’ Luka
Doncic giving the fans a
show to remember.
But in the end, the 34-
year-old James showed why
he’s still the master, domi-
nating in ways he has been
known to do over his distin-
guished 17-year career, tak-
ing his game to another level
with a dazzling triple-dou-
ble, pulling the Lakers along
with him for a 119-110 over-
time victory over the 20-
year-old Doncic and the
Mavericks.
James produced 39
points, 12 rebounds and 16
assists, the sold-out crowd of
20,358 showing their appre-
ciation with cheers.
“Offensively, we just
couldn’t make a shot to start
the game and I was getting
great looks for my team-
mates and those shots just
weren’t going down,” James
said. “But the most impor-
tant thing, we just continued
to defend and that’s what’s
always going to keep us in
the game. So just for me I
tried to be aggressive at cer-
tain points of the first half,
seeing if my shot was going
to go, seeing if I had a good
hand and even with the first
half and the struggles that
we had, offensively was able
to stay in the game because
defensively we were still in
tune.”
Doncic also produced a
triple-double with 31 points,

13 rebounds and 15 assists,
his hometown fans roaring
their approval of the wun-
derkind.
According to NBA.com,
James and Doncic become
the youngest and oldest
players in NBA history to
put up 30 points, 10 rebounds
and 10 assists.
When James and Doncic
switched to defend each
other on a few occasions, the
fans seemed to enjoy the mo-
ments. They especially loved
it when Doncic hit a step-
back three-pointer over
James in the first half.
“At the end of the day, for
me it’s how can I help the
team defensively through-
out that one possession, and
then offensively how can I
get a great look either for
myself or my teammate no
matter the matchup, no
matter who’s on me,” James
said.
“Obviously, he’s a great
young talent. I love his game,
his ability to not only create
shots for himself. But you
guys know I love the fact that

he can get great looks for his
teammates. That’s what I
thrive on, that’s what I’ve al-
ways believed in and he just
plays the game the right
way.”
With the Lakers down
three points in the fourth
quarter, James found Danny
Green in the corner for a
three-pointer that tied the
score at 103 as time expired.
Once the game got to the
overtime, James took over.
He scored nine points,
grabbed two rebounds and
handed out two assists in
the final five minutes of the
game.
“Nobody in the history of
the game delivers the ball
out to his shooters and
scorers better than LeBron
James,” Lakers coach Frank
Vogel said. “When he’s scor-
ing as well, he’s nearly im-
possible to beat. Credit
Dallas, they played a great
game. But it wasn’t enough
to slow him down to-
night.”
James even had an au-
thoritative dunk over Dori-
an Finney-Smith that made
the crowd erupt with cheers
and James’ teammates leap
off the bench.
When the game was over,
James and Doncic shared a
hug at center court.
“You saw that look in
his eyes,” Vogel said about
James. “He had it in the
third quarter, really just
changed the momentum
of the game, put it in our fa-
vor. And then obviously late
in the game, his ability to not
only make big shots but
quarterback the action
out there.... He’s just spe-
cial.”

BOX SCORES

Anthony Davis scored 31
points with eight rebounds,
and Kyle Kuzma added nine
in 19 minutes in his season
debut. The Lakers capi-
talized on 23 Mavericks turn-
overs for 30 points and over-
came early shooting and re-
bounding struggles that left
them in double-digit holes
against a talented young
Dallas team.
“Offensively we just
couldn’t make a shot to start
the game,” James said. “...
But the most important
thing, we continued to de-
fend. That’s what’s always
going to keep us in the
game.”
The matchup pitted the
Lakers’ dynamic duo
against another new pair of
elite players in Dallas’
Kristaps Porzingis and sec-
ond-year star Doncic.
The Lakers struck first,
with an alley oop from James
to Davis, but then Dallas
went on an 11-0 run. They
trailed by as many as 14 in
the first quarter, but cut the
Mavericks’ lead to five by the
end.
One problem for the Lak-
ers was that they shot only
30.4% in the first quarter.
While the Lakers improved
in the second quarter, their
rebounding was lacking.
The Mavericks out-re-
bounded the Lakers 17-4 in
the quarter en route to a 58-
48 halftime lead.
“No one panicked,” Lak-
ers coach Frank Vogel said.
“Everybody just stayed the
course. Stuck to what we do,
what we know works.”
James orchestrated a
third-quarter comeback,
guiding the Lakers on a 10-0
run to start the period. He
attempted five three-point-
ers and made three of them

in the early minutes, and the
Lakers got their first lead, at
63-61, since the score was 2-0.
But that effort couldn’t
stop the next Mavericks
push. After James headed to
the bench, Dallas widened
its lead once more. With the
help of three three-pointers
in the final 2:26 of the third,
Dallas entered the fourth
quarter leading by nine.
Green hit a three-pointer
with 5:08 left in the game to
tie it at 92. A two-handed,
running dunk by James min-
utes later gave the Lakers a
96-94 lead.
James stormed back
toward the Lakers’ basket as
the Mavericks called a time-
out. He and Davis glared
into each other’s eyes before
pounding their chests to-
gether.
Dorian Finney-Smith’s
three put the Mavericks on
top with 31 seconds left, but
with a chance to ice the
game, Dwight Powell missed
one of two from the line.
That left the door open for
the Lakers, who had a play
they hoped would work
Howard set a screen and,

he admitted, got away with a
hold on Curry as James
drove to the basket.
“I had every thought in
mind of they were going to
try to foul on the inbounds,
they would try to foul on the
drive,” James said. “I’m
reading and reacting to the
defense. When I seen Danny
get a clean look, I just tried to
put it on time, on target.”
The pass was low, but
James said Green likes the
ball a little low sometimes.
Then Green built on a dec-
ade of NBA experience.
“It takes a lot of patience
and a lot of failure,” Green
said. “I’ve been in that situa-
tion multiple times, many
times. And I’ve missed.
Sometimes you’re gonna
miss. But you’ve gotta go
take that next shot and
don’t worry about it.”
Given a second chance,
James and Davis overpow-
ered Doncic, who scored all
of Dallas’ seven overtime
points, while James and
Davis combined for 15 and
Green scored the 16th.
In the end, the poise of a
team of veterans prevailed.
