BREEDERS’ CUP

What happened:Donna Veloce was try-
ing to become the first horse to win a
two-turn Breeders’ Cup dirt race with
just one prior start ... and she almost
pulled it off. The daughter of Uncle Mo
swept to the lead with a quarter-mile re-
maining but was run down with about
100 yards remaining by British Idiom
($7.40), who prevailed by a neck to re-
main unbeaten in three career starts for
trainer Brad Cox. Donna Veloce had won
her only start by 9¼ lengths at 6½ fur-
longs on Sept. 28 at Santa Anita. British
Idiom had won a maiden sprint at Sara-
toga and then the Grade I Alcibiades
around two turns last month at
Keeneland. It was the second Cup win
for Cox, who captured the Distaff last
year with Monomoy Girl.

Did you know?Donna Veloce cost
owner Kaleem Shah $800,000 at a 2-
year-old sale earlier this year, but the
owners of British Idiom picked up the
daughter of Flashback for “only”
$40,000 at a yearling sale last October.

Quote: “We put these 2-year-olds
through a lot, we want to put them
through a lot in order to build a tough
horse mentally and physically. So I didn't
think it would be an issue at all as far as
coming out here.” — Cox

JUVENILE FILLIES

What happened: The first big upset of
the Breeders’ Cup came as Sharing
($29.60) edged Daahyeh by 1¼ lengths
to give jockey Manny Franco his first vic-
tory in this event. Sharing broke well and
Franco got her from the No. 11 post posi-
tion to near the rail entering the first
turn. Either third or fourth through the
middle part of the race, she passed
Sweet Melania less than 100 yards from
the finish.

Did you know?Trainer Graham Motion
won his fourth Cup race; his second
came nine years ago with the dam of
Sharing, Shared Account, in the Filly and
Mare Turf.

Quote:“What I like to do is find athletic
fillies with big pedigrees and track them
through the [sales] ring and hope that
we get them within our budget. And this
filly was no bargain at $350,000 at the
time, but I thought that there was plenty
of upside and a lot of inherent residual
value.” — Aron Wellman, president of
Eclipse Thoroughbreds, which bought
the filly last year at Saratoga.

JUVENILE FILLIES TURF

What happened:Any thoughts it might
be a favorites-only day ended when
Structor, the 5-1 third choice, burst clear
in the stretch to win this one-mile grass
race by a half-length over 50-1 Billy
Batts, with Gear Jockey third at 60-1.
Jockey Jose Ortiz took over when his
brother Irad opted to ride Decorated In-
vader and made it an Ortiz double — Irad
had earlier won the Turf Sprint — with
his third Cup win. Toward the back of the
pack, Hit The Road and jockey Flavien
Prat were disqualified from a dead-heat
for seventh and placed last for interfer-
ing with Deviant.

Did you know? The victory was the 13th
in a Cup race for trainer Chad Brown, but
his first in 12 tries in this race. He said he
would consider running Structor on the
dirt leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
Owners Jeff Drown and Don Rachel paid
$850,000 for the son of Palace Malice.

Quote:“I have been here before with
other horses that have won these Ju-
venile Turf races, and I don’t think I’ve
ever said I’m going to run one on the dirt.
So this horse, he gives me the feeling like
he’ll take to it, but we’ll see. But we’ll en-
joy this.” — Brown

JUVENILE TURF

What happened: The 10th Breeders’
Cup at Santa Anita began with a race
that a year ago likely would have been
run down the hill at 6^1 ⁄ 2 furlongs, but that
portion of the course has been closed to
sprints for safety reasons. Four Wheel
Drive ($5.00), sent off as the 3-2 favorite
on the basis of two stakes wins in two ca-
reer starts, jumped to the lead out of the
gate, opened up on Chimney Rock on the
turn, then held that one safe throughout
the stretch run to win by three-quarters
of a length. It was the sixth Cup win for
jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and the third for
trainer Wesley Ward.

Did you know? The winner was sired by
American Pharoah, who was last seen at
the Breeders’ Cup in 2015 completing
racing’s “Grand Slam” — the three Triple
Crown races and the Breeders’ Cup
Classic. This is the first crop of Pharoah
horses to make it to the races; in addition
to the winner, he also sired the third-
place horse.

Quote:“American Pharoah, from what
I’ve seen, was a very docile horse. He
could go anywhere and took everything
in and he was almost like a stable pony.
And this guy’s the same way.” — Ward

JUVENILE TURF SPRINT

Trainer Bob Baffert is used to
having the favorite in almost any
race he has entered a horse. But on
Saturday at Santa Anita, he will be
feeling extra pressure with the fa-
vorite in the $6-million Breeders’
Cup Classic.
McKinzie is the 3-1 morning-line
choice to win the 1^1 ⁄ 4 mile conclu-
sion to $30 million in purses over
two days. McKinzie was named for
Brad McKinzie, the longtime Los
Alamitos executive and a close
friend of Baffert’s since they met at
the Race Track Industry Program
at University of Arizona. McKinzie
died of kidney cancer on Aug. 6,
2017.
“I feel a little extra pressure on
me when this horse runs because I
know we’re all thinking about him,”
Baffert said. “I’m just glad that we
named a really good horse after
him because it would have been
horrible if I had to geld this horse.”

No doubt, the “geld this horse”
line would have been McKinzie’s if
he had known there was a horse
named after him.
“Brad was probably one of the
funniest guys I’ve ever been
around,” Baffert said. “We just
loved him. We still tell stories when
my family gets together. There was
no one more fun to be with when
you went to a football game be-
cause he was just hysterical.”
McKinzie also excelled when it
came to making horse racing bet-
ter. He helped save the Southern
California thoroughbred circuit af-
ter Hollywood Park closed by per-
suading Los Alamitos owner Ed
Allred to expand the track and add
more stabling area. Along with
Mike Lyon, he came up with a
workers’ compensation system for
backstretch workers that is widely
used in the business.
McKinzie, the horse, has won
three Grade 1 stakes races but of
late has been finishing second.
This year, he has two wins and four

seconds. His second in the Met-
ropolitan Handicap at Belmont
was a race that still haunts Baffert.
“It was very frustrating to lose
the Met Mile because he was so
good that day,” Baffert said. “I

really don’t blame [jockey] Mike
[Smith] that much. He had to
make a decision there and he made
the wrong one.”
McKinzie followed that up with
a win in the Whitney and then fin-
ished second to Mongolian Groom
in the Awesome Again at Santa
Anita. It was his third second at
Santa Anita this year in three
starts. Smith, who had ridden
McKinzie in all 13 of his races, was
taken off in favor of Joel Rosario,
who will ride McKinzie in the Clas-
sic.
“That’s why I did the jockey
switch, because he hadn’t won [at
Santa Anita this year],” Baffert
said. “I thought I had to do some-
thing different.”
It’s not expected to be a run-
away for McKinzie on Saturday.
Vino Rosso, who won the Gold Cup
at Santa Anita, and Code of Honor,
winner of the Travers Stakes at
Saratoga, are both 4-1 on the morn-
ing line. There is a mare, Elate, who
has finished first twice and second

twice in her last four races at 6-1.
Higher Power, who won the Pacific
Classic at Del Mar by 5^1 ⁄ 4 lengths, is
also 6-1. And Preakness winner War
Of Will is 20-1.
“I just want the horse to show
up,” Baffert said. “If he shows up
and gets outrun, he gets outrun.
There’s a lot on the line. There are
championships on the line. There
is horse of the year on the line.
That’s the beauty of the Breeders’
Cup. They are going to give out a lot
of championships this weekend. I
just hope that some of mine are on
that list.”
McKinzie is scheduled to come
back as a 5-year-old, unusual for a
horse of his ability. Baffert is
mulling over the idea of sending
him to the Middle East for the inau-
gural $20-million Saudi Cup and
the $12-million Dubai World Cup.
No doubt, Brad McKinzie’s
head would be spinning if he ever
knew a horse named after him
might one day be running in a $20-
million race.

McKinzie has special meaning to Baffert

“Out of the gate, I said to myself
‘Oh man,’ ” said jockey Irad Ortiz
Jr. “You don’t see too many horses
like that stumble that badly out of
the gate and come back to win the
race. I asked him for run early, he
gave it to me and put a good effort
into the turn, but then at the quar-
ter pole he slowed down.”
Storm The Court was the least
expensive purchase of all the eight
horses entered. He was a $60,000
purchase at the Ocala (Fla.)
Breeders Sale. Eight Rings was
bought for $520,000 and Dennis’
Moment for $400,000. Wrecking
Crew and Shoplifted both went for
$800,000 or more.
Talk about getting more than
what you paid for.
Eight Rings, winner of the Ameri-
can Pharoah, was in a perfect posi-
tion all the way around, but when
jockey John Velazquez asked him
entering the stretch, he came up
empty. He finished sixth.
Storm The Court paid $93.80,
$24.80 and $12.00. The remainder of
the field in the 1^1 ⁄ 16 -mile race was
Anneau d’Or, Wrecking Crew,
Scabbard, Full Flat, Eight Rings,
Shoplifted and Dennis’ Moment.
The attendance was 41,243 and the
Breeders’ Cup set a first-day
record for handle of more than $56
million.
The idea to add blinkers came
from jockey Flavien Prat, who had
ridden Storm The Court in his pre-
vious three starts. Storm The
Court won his first race, got caught
up with Eight Rings in the Del Mar
Futurity and both jockeys were
sent to the ground, and then fin-
ished third in the American
Pharoah.
“I thought last time [in the
American Pharoah] he ran a little
green,” Prat said. “He broke well,
and then he was kind of looking
around. On the back side he lost his
focus and dropped back. So, I
thought the blinkers might help
him. And so actually it did, and I
think that the fact that he ran two
turns once was a big help.”
In deep stretch it looked as if
Anneau d’Or was going to go by
Storm The Court, but that made
the soon-to-be winner try only
harder. “I knew he would fight, I
just didn’t know how much,” Eur-
ton said. “And once he did put his
head out in front like he did, I knew
it might be kind of interesting all
the way to the wire.”
According to Eurton, Storm
The Court also benefited from a
home-track advantage, being sta-
bled and training at Santa Anita.
“I think it’s a big advantage to
train here, and I mean for the guys
that ship in I know how bad it is if
you’re not up in the race and the
kickback is tough here. It’s a track
that I think you need to train on as
anybody here will tell you that.”
As is usual for a winning trainer,
Eurton had no idea what the plans
are going to be with the Storm The
Court, although it’s likely he’ll get
the rest of the year off.
It’s likely that these horses will
meet somewhere down the road —
especially Storm The Court and
Eight Rings.
“He was in a good spot the
whole way and [jockey] Johnny
[Velazquez] said when they came
to the three-eighths pole he took a
deep breath and then he just didn’t
go when Johnny asked him,”
trainer Bob Baffert said about
Eight Rings. “He didn’t show up. ...
You’ve got to give credit to the win-
ner. He just kept on going.”
Dennis’ Moment is likely to go to
Kentucky to start his 3-year-old
season. Because of how he broke
from the gate, most experts will ig-
nore this race as any indication of
his future.
