For devotees of the Arts and

Crafts movement, the annual

Craftsman Weekend in Pasadena
is a welcome dive into Arts and

Crafts architecture, design and

theory.

This year, Pasadena Heritage

teams with the South Pasadena

Preservation Foundation in organ-

izing a self-drive tour of six homes,

including three by famed archi-

tects Charles and Henry Greene.

The tour includes the noted

Duncan-Irwin House (1906-08), built along the Ar-

royo Seco and furnished with museum-quality

items from Revival Antiques, a Pasadena antiques

dealer specializing in Arts and Crafts furniture &

lighting.

Other Greene and Greene properties include

the Howard Longley House (1897) in South Pasa-

dena, and next door, an exterior tour of the Garfield

House (1904), built for Lucretia Garfield, widow of

former President James A.
Garfield.
The tour also includes the Ide
House, a Craftsman bungalow de-
signed by D.M. Renton in 1913 in
the Orange Heights Historic Dis-
trict, the Childs-Torrance House
(1904), a three-story Tudor Revival
home by Charles Wesley Buchan-
an in the Buena Vista Historic Dis-
trict, and a “Craftsman makeover”
of a former carriage house.
Craftsman Weekend will also
include walking tours of landmark
neighborhoods (as well as lesser
known landmark districts), lec-
tures and bus tours, and the Antiques and Contem-
porary Furnishings and Decorative Arts Sale at the
Pasadena Convention Center.
Homes on the tour will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, with last entry at 4 p.m. The event is self-
guided, so participants can visit the houses in any
order. Tickets are $45 and $55 in advance or $55 and
$65 day of tour. Shuttle tickets are available for $30-
$35.

When tickets to Modernism Week

went on sale last year, some events sold out quickly.

So we want to give fans of the Midcentury Modern

design showcase a heads-up: Tickets to Modernism

Week, held Feb. 13-23, 2020, in Palm Springs, are on sale

now, so don’t delay. (They went on sale Friday, so there’s
still time. But not much.)

Sure, events like the Signature

Home Tours and the Charles

Phoenix Super Duper Double Decker

bus tours are popular, but there are

more than 350 events to choose from,

spanning walking architecture tours

to the Modernism Show & Sale and

Vintage Trailer Show.

Modernism Week will also offer

tours of five homes in the Coachella Valley, including the

Gilman Residence (1948), recently remodeled by Thom-

boy Properties, the Guggenheim House (1967) remodeled

by Grace Home Furnishings, and the Miles Bates “Wave”

House (1955) designed by architect Walter S. White and

being restored by Los Angeles-based Stayner Architects.

Iinterior designer Christopher Kennedy will unveil a

newly remodeled 1972 Canyon Estates home designed by

architect Charles DuBois and the Mesa Modern design
house will offer an updated look at contemporary art,

architecture, interior and landscape design.
