English springboards
⋅ Take two dice and a copy of Spotlight to the get-
together. A member of the group throws the dice
and puts the two numbers together to create a
page number. He/she then turns to that page in the
magazine and chooses a picture, a theme, a headline
or a phrase from the page to talk about.
⋅ Ask each group member to write down the names of
five people who have been important in their lives
— for example a good teacher, a driving instructor, a
best friend, a doctor or a family member. The names
should be numbered 1 to 5. In turn, one person asks
another: “Please tell us about person number X.”

Activity 1
Yo u ’v e d e c i d e d t o o r g a n i z e a r e g u l a r get-together where
you can chat in English. Here are three ideas to get the
conversation started. Encourage questions from the
group to elicit more details and keep the conversation
going.
⋅ Copy the phrases below on to slips of paper and
give one to each member of the group. Each person
should fill in the blanks with their own ideas to
formulate a topic to talk about. Then the cards are
placed in a pile, face down on the table. One by one,
members of the group turn over a card and talk
about the topic on it.
