18 Spotlight 13/2019 LANGUAGE

Activity 2
You’ve decided to have an e-mail exchange in English
but are short of ideas on what to write about. Here are
some e-mail starters:

⋅ I read something interesting recently and wanted to
share it with you. It was about...

⋅ I went to the cinema recently and saw...
⋅ Did you see that news item last week about...?
⋅ Next weekend, I’m planning to...
⋅ I’m a bit worried about...
⋅ What would you do if you were me? It’s a tricky^
situation...

⋅ Do you know what my star sign predicted this
week?

⋅ Something really nice happened last week...

Activity 3
You’ve decided to do some English whenever you have
a bit of spare time. Here are some quick tasks you can
practise silently:

⋅ Take the handy-size Spotlight plus with you
wherever you go so that you can do an exercise or
two when the opportunity arises.

⋅ Read a newspaper headline or article and think
about how you would explain it to an English
speaker.

⋅ Think of something you own that you would like
to sell on an online auction site. How would you
describe it?

⋅ Make a mental list of five things you want to
achieve today.

⋅ The next time you use an ATM, switch the
instructions to English.

⋅ Think of as many English song titles as you can.
⋅ Go through the alphabet, thinking of three words
beginning with each letter.

⋅ How would you explain to a young child how to
take a selfie?

Activity 4
You’ve decided to personalize your learning. Try some
of these tasks:

⋅ Think of three areas of interest or situations in
which you need to speak English, e.g. computers,
telephoning, holidays or going to the bank. Use
each topic as a headline and, underneath it, list five
related words or phrases you already know. Then
look up three more useful words or phrases and add
them to your list.

⋅ Look through the latest copy of Spotlight. Which
features did you find the most useful? Write down
six new phrases from these sections. Try to use each
of these in the course of the following week.

⋅ Write down three words you could use to describe
different aspects of yourself and your life: your
appearance, your character, your profession, your
home, your family, your hobbies and your dreams
and ambitions.
