Irish adventures

W

hat a sight it must have been when,
in 914, a fleet of Viking longboats,
their enormous red and white sails
ballooned by a cold wind, landed
on Ireland’s south-east coast. Those
Norsemen were looking to establish
a settlement, and the place where they landed is today the city of
Waterford. Recently, Spotlight author Paul Wheatley visited the
city’s exciting and informative “Viking Triangle”. He also went
to the studios where the highly successful Vikings series is filmed.
Paul’s journey begins on page 26.
Earlier this year, we asked you, dear readers, to send us descrip-
tions of your favourite travel destinations, to tell us your favour-
ite jokes, and we invited you to visit us in the Spotlight offices for
an English seminar. How did it work out? You can find out what
our author Lynda Huebner taught at the seminar (pages 12–18),
enjoy the travel tips (pages 34–38), read a book review (page 71)
and have a giggle over the jokes (page 72). To help you find all the
relevant pages, we have added the “readers’ issue” symbol (see
the top left-hand corner of this page) to all these sections. From
all of us at the Spotlight offices, thank you very much to everyone
who took part. It has been a lot of fun working with you.
