ELF-TAUGHT Brazilian designer

José Zanine Caldas never quite

settled on a single style. Born

on the coast of Bahia in 1919, he

worked as a restorer and model maker

before beginning his own artistic practice,

transforming construction materials like

plywood into sculptural furniture designs.

“The abstract expressionism, the biomor-

phism, the organicism that he’s putting

into the shape of the plywood, particularly

from a side profile, like the arm structure

and the leg structure, are incredibly excit-

ing,” says Zesty Meyers, the co-founder

of New York design gallery R & Company.

“Some of them look like they’re moving or

walking or taking off.” After the military

coup of 1964, Zanine moved to the beach

town of Nova Viçosa, where he began mak-

ing sturdier hardwood pieces, often from

recycled material, in protest of deforesta-

tion, while writing prolifically on Brazil’s

fast-diminishing forests. This month, to

honor the late designer’s 100th birthday,

R & Company is staging Against the Grain,

showing dozens of Zanine’s aesthetically

disparate designs from his sprawling

four-decade career. “Most people in the

design world are one-hit wonders,”

says Meyers. “Zanine had a thousand.”
