FROM NEWS SERVICES
AND STAFF REPORTS

The Washington Redskins
elected not to pay Trent Williams
the remaining $5.1 million bal-
ance on his 2019 base salary, ac-
cording to two people with knowl-
edge of the d ecision, which came a
day after the team announced it
was placing the left tackle on the
non-football injury list.
The team has the right to with-
hold the salary for players on the
non-football injury list, according
to NFL rules. Even so, the NFL
Players Association is expected to
fight the decision as Williams
probably will file a grievance with
the league.
Williams ended a five-month
holdout shortly before the NFL
trade deadline to ensure this year
would be counted under his con-
tract, allowing him to become an
unrestricted free agent after the
2020 season. The Redskins still
could attempt to toll Williams’s
contract and have it cover the
2020 and 2021 seasons, pushing
back his free agency another year.
Williams and the NFL Players As-
sociation could challenge such an
attempt.
The seven-time Pro Bowl selec-
tion says that he no longer wants
to play for the Redskins and that
the team misdiagnosed a cancer-
ous growth on his head.
The Redskins have declined to
comment.

l CHIEFS: Patrick Mahomes
will start for Kansas City against
the Te nnessee Titans on Sunday,
just over two weeks after the quar-
terback’s season was jeopardized
by a dislocated kneecap.
Mahomes never missed a prac-
tice after hurting his knee on a
Thursday night against Denver,
even though some thought the
seriousness of the injury could
sideline the NFL MVP for
months.
But it turned out there was no
structural damage, and it became
a waiting game to see when Ma-
homes would return. He p racticed
on a limited basis the first week
before being ruled out against
Green Bay, t hen was limited again
last week before being inactive
against Minnesota.
“We knew how we’ve been do-
ing the whole process of the inju-
ry,” Mahomes said after Friday’s
practice. “I knew I had a chance
once I talked to all those doctors,
and they said that as long as I was
functioning well, moving well,
that I could play this week.”
l FALCONS: Quarterback
Matt Ryan was removed from At-
lanta’s injury report and appears
set to play against the New Or-
leans Saints.
Ryan had only limited partici-
pation in Friday’s practice. But
that was enough for Coach Dan
Quinn to say the veteran quarter-
back was ready for Sunday’s game.
A bye week helped Ryan recov-
er after a sprained right ankle
forced him to miss a game for the
first time since 2009 in the Fal-
cons’ loss to Seattle two weeks
ago.
l VIKINGS: Minnesota
doesn’t need a lesson on the last-
ing nature o f hamstring trouble. It
endured a tough one just last year.
Running back Dalvin Cook had
a long absence in 2018 because of
a hamstring injury. Now wide re-
ceiver Adam Thielen could be
sidelined for the rest of the
month.
The Vikings ruled Thielen out
for Sunday night at Dallas, in-
creasing the possibility the two-
time Pro Bowl p ick will rest for the
Nov. 17 game against Denver.
l BROWNS: Cleveland signed
steady center JC Tretter to a three-
year, $32.5 million contract e xten-
sion.
Tretter has started all 40 games
— and not missed one play — since
signing with Cleveland as a free
agent before the 2017 season.
l JETS: New York expects
Le’Veon Bell t o be in the backfield
when it squares off against the
Giants.
Sam Darnold and the offense
also could have tight end Chris
Herndon on the field for the first
time this season.
l DOLPHINS: Safety Reshad
Jones will miss his fourth game i n
a row Sunday at Indianapolis be-
cause of a chest injury.
Jones, the Dolphins’ highest-
paid player, has played in only
three games this year.
l COWBOYS: Linebacker
Leighton Vander Esch is set to
return against Minnesota after
the second-year player missed the
first game of his career Monday
night a gainst the New York Giants
with a neck injury.
