It’s in he ars
Alan Duffy is an astrophysicist
and associate professor at
Swinburne University. When not
exploring simulated universes on
supercomputers, you can find him
in this universe explaining the
latest science news as a regular
on ABC Breakfast TV, ABC Radio Melbourne and Triple J
Hack. He generally spends his time looking at the stars,
but we wanted his scientific take on Earth at the moment.
You know lots of interesting science facts – do you
have one for us gardeners? As any gardener knows,
plants need lots of nitrogen and trace elements of iron, but
did you know these elements were forged from two entirely
different stars that lived and died before our Sun (and
Earth!) even began? Nitrogen can be fused inside smaller
stars like our Sun and gently released into space when they
die, while iron comes from a massive star exploding as a
supernova that outshines the entire galaxy for a time.
Does your small part of the universe have a garden?
I have a lovely backyard, small enough to manage with
an occasional mowing of the lawn, but big enough that
I managed to miss watering my chilli plant and it died. I
feel terrible admitting this in these hallowed pages.
Do you think science is heading towards a solution
to the effects of climate change? Science has already
provided us the tools to mitigate the worst effects by
limiting further emissions through mass adoption of
new renewable technologies combined with global
reforestation efforts, amongst other solutions. What
we now need to do is push our politicians and industries
to take up those tools as quickly as possible.
