C
ritics dubbed Howard Hughes’s H-4 Her-
cules troop-transport plane the Spruce
Goose, but the White Elephant might have
been more apt. The bloated wooden air-
plane, commissioned by the U.S.government to fly
tanks and 700 soldiers high above enemy fire over
the Atlantic Ocean, cost US$23-million – about
US$265-million in today’s dollars. The wartime ra-
tioning of steel and aluminum meant Hughes, the
eccentric movie tycoon and industrialist behind
Hughes Aircraft, used plastic-impregnated birch to
build the plane that sported eight engines and a
wingspan that stretched almost 100 metres – a
span unmatched by any plane since. But by the
time it was finished in 1946, the plane’s master-
mind had quit, the war was over and U.S. law-
makers had no interest in an overbudget, behind-
schedule seaplane that might actually fall apart in
flight. A defiant Hughes defended his project be-
fore a Senate committee investigating the waste of
taxpayers’ money, declaring, “If it’s a failure, I’ll
probably leave this country and never come back.”
Instead, he surprised onlookers on this day in 1947
by piloting the Spruce Goose to a brief first – and
only – flight on the waters off Long Beach, Calif.
