DEATHS

JOHN SHERMAN BLEAKNEY

At the age of 91, John Sherman
Bleakney died peacefully on
October 25, 2019 at Wickwire Place
in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, with his
two children, Jill and Peter, at his
side. From an early age, Sherman
loved the outdoors and developed
an interest in herpetology, the
study of reptiles and amphibians.
Story has it that to first get the
attention of his future wife,
Nancy, a fellow biology study at
Acadia University, he put a frog
down her lab coat. He went on
to do his PhD at McGill University
on the distribution of reptiles and
amphibians in eastern Canada.
A few years after taking the
position of Curator of Herpetology
at the National Museum in
Ottawa, Sherman returned to
his alma mater in Wolfville to
accept a biology professorship
at Acadia, where he mentored
and inspired students until his
retirement in 1988. As a diligent
researcher and creative thinker
who was not afraid to stretch
academic boundaries, always
with a healthy dose of humour
and irreverence, he leaves a
legacy of scientific research and
publications on everything from
leatherback sea turtles to sea
slugs to chimpanzee art to the
origins of European medieval
mollusc symbols to Acadian
dykeland construction methods.
The only child of Ruby Isadore
Mitchell of Seattle, Washington,
and Guy Garfield Bleakney of
Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Sherman
is survived by daughter, Jill
Blakeney (Dwight Sayers), and
son, Peter Bleakney (Claire Toth)
along with grandchildren Angela,
Christopher, Evan, Alex and Lee,
and by his later-in-life partner,
Elizabeth Walter. Sherman is
predeceased by his loving wife
and best friend of 45 years, Nancy
Patricia (Tyler).
The family would like to thank
the staff of Wickwire Place for
their support of Sherman, family
doctor Dr. Hazen Burton and
nurse practitioner Erica Maynard
for their care, and the staff of
Serenity Funeral Home.
As per Sherman’s wishes, his
ashes were scattered on the ebb
tide at Port Williams, to merge
with his beloved Minas Basin and
into the Bay of Fundy. In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may
be made to the Canadian Sea
Turtle Network.

JOHN CARTER

On October 29, 2019, following
a bountiful life, John Carter of
Georgetown, Ontario and Naples,
Florida has passed away.
A graduate of Ridley College and
the HBA programme of Western
University (class of 1965). In his
professional life he was most
proud of his years as the Treasurer
of Monsanto Canada where his
financial wizardry led to Treasury
providing a profit contribution in a
couple of years rivalling that of the
larger business.
John could be a blithe spirit who
also understood the importance
of being earnest, both on the
boards and on the board with the
Georgetown Little Theatre. John
took particular pride in helping
to lead the rebuilding efforts after
a terrible fire destroyed their
rehearsal space. He also took
great joy in performances with the
Naples Players.
But John’s true calling was as
patriarchandmasterofceremonies
to his “hyperextended” family
and network of friends. His
capacious nature and generosity
were as large as his famous bear
hugs. John is predeceased by his
siblings Tom Carter and Elizabeth
Macpherson, his first wife
Margaret Rutherford and their
gentle giant of a son Jason, and
his beloved wife Ruth Hustwayte.
His memory as father, friend, and
mentor is kept by Jason’s sister Jill
Farrington and her husband Drew;
sons Ken, Bill, and, John Marchant
and their spouses Lorraine,
Matt Fentiman, and Andrea; his
“adopted” kids Lori and Olivier
Gysel; nine grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren. John
will be painfully missed by his
current partner in Love, life, and
golf, Nancy McIntyre and her
children Sherri and Mark and their
5 kids - JC was grampa to them
as well. He’ll be fondly missed by
all his friends at the North Halton
Golf Club; on the condo board at
the Pines in Naples where some
considered him a founder of the
community; at the Gallery at
Bennet Centre in Georgetown
where he acted as an advisor to
the board.
Everywhere JC went was a party,
we’ll all miss the infamous “King
of Norway”.
Donations in John’s memory
may be made to his favourite
charity, the Georgetown Hospital
Foundation. To send expressions
of sympathy, please visit

DEATHS

CATHERINE ANN DOHERTY
August 17, 1956
October 27, 2019

Surrounded by family and friends,
Catherine passed peacefully
from this world on Sunday,
October 27, 2019. Reunited with
her dear brother Darcy, parents
Ann and George Brian, and dogs
Kingston and Casey. Catherine is
survived by her spouse Peter Kiar,
and dogs Hoover and Nicki.
Catherine was the second eldest
in a large family of siblings -
Barb (Bill), Isobel (Bruno), Brian
(Debby), Darcy (Rebecca) and
Elizabeth (René). Catherine
was a special aunt to her nieces
and nephews - Carolyn, Patrick,
Charlie, Sean, Tori, Ganden, Reid,
Cian, Andre and Joanna.
Catherine grew up in Oshawa,
part of a neighbourhood that
led to deep friendships that
became part of her extended
family. She continued to make
lifelong friends in all facets of her
life - from her university days,
neighbours from different homes
over the years, dog park friends,
and friends and colleagues
from her professional life.
The majority of Catherine’s
career was in the Ontario Public
Service, in the ministries of
housing, environment, and the
Office of the Public Guardian and
Trustee. Throughout her career,
she was a strong administrator
and public servant, and a fierce
friend to her colleagues.
Catherine’s true joy was her life
with Peter and the dogs, and
being the naughty, and incredibly
loving, aunt to her nieces and
nephews. Nothing secretly
pleased her more than being
mistaken for their grandmother.
In return, they showered her with
love and support, particularly
during the difficult final days.
Due to her health, she did not have
an easy life, but as she said herself,
she had a good life. Through it
all, she remained unrelentingly
positive. Her generosity of
spirit and ability to light up a
room with her personality were
hallmarks of her being.
Rest in peace our sweet Catherine

  • you have earned a good rest.
Thank you to her team of doctors
    over the years, including Dr.
    Julie McIntyre and Dr. Gillian
Lindzon. A special thank you to
    Dr. Jordan Feld and assistant
Eli Bicja who had a special place
    in Catherine’s heart. You were
    there when she needed you
    the most. The family would
also like to thank the doctors
    and nurses at Princess Margaret
    Hospital 16P palliative unit. Your
    incredible support and kindness
to the family will not be forgotten.
    A celebration of Catherine’s
life will be held on Saturday,
    November 9, 2019, 1:00 pm, at the
    Jubilee Pavilion, 55 Lakeview Park
    Avenue, Oshawa, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, please consider
a donation to Old Friends Senior
    Dog Sanctuary https://ofsds.org/
    donate-to-old-friends-senior-dog-
    sanctuary/ in Catherine’s honour.
