(Toronto)Bruce passed away peacefully
at Kensington Gardens after
a lengthy illness. He was
predeceased by his parents, and
sister Iris. Arriving in Canada in
his 20s, he was, for many years,
a researcher and scriptwriter for
the CBC’s The Nature of Things,
including such episodes as “Secret
Fears: Overcoming Phobias”,
“The Sleep Famine” and “Monkey
Business”. Bruce was a constant
fount of ideas for feature films -
his notes (in his distinctive, loopy
handwriting) filled hundreds of
journals - but the only one of his
scripts to reach the big screen was
filmed in Italy (starring Joanna
Pacula) and released (in 1992) as
the horror/slasher feature “Body
Parts”. In addition to his love
of the macabre, Bruce was also
a fan of (in no particular order)
chimpanzees, Danny Kaye, The
Goon Show, walking, Cole Porter,
house plants, Richard Wagner,
cooking (scampi and puttanesca
sauce his specialties), and
Weimaraners (especially Strauss
and Groucho). Bruce was much
beloved by his friends, who will
miss him - his gothic tastes, his
smart-ass rejoinders and his sense

October 17, 2019Our beloved Mary Ellen died
surrounded by her loving family
on October 17, 2019, at Kensington
Hospice in Toronto, Ontario. She
had, with bravery and dignity,
generosity and good humour,
lived with multiple myeloma for
several years before it took her
from us, but not her spirit which
will live on with her daughters,
Kathryn and Sarah Carpentier,
and their husbands respectively,
Robert Whillans and Jonathan
Popalis; her chosen son, Kris
Kaplan and his wife, Kimberly
Kaplan; her husband and partner
of 47 years, Russell Carpentier;
her grandchildren, Samuel,
Josephine, Matthew and Hannah;
and the many who love her.
Mary Ellen was born and grew
up in Cooperstown, New York.
After completing high school at
School of the Holy Child in Rye,
N.Y., she attended Columbia
University, Barnard College, from
which she graduated with a
degree in psychology in 1969. She
later completed a post-graduate
program at the University of
Toronto’s Institute for Children’s
Studies in 1977.
Children and their families were
the central focus of Mary Ellen’s
life. Whether as mother, wife,
aunt, nana, friend, neighbour,
counsellor, teacher or colleague,
she had a special ability to
communicate “I believe in you,
I trust in you, I believe you can
handle this, You are listened
to, You are cared for, You are
important to me.” Those who
know her will tell you this is all
true. Mary Ellen taught primary
school in Toronto for many years
including Downtown Alternative
School, Niagara Street Public
School and King Edward Public
School. Prior to her teaching
career Mary Ellen provided
counselling to teens in difficult
circumstances, supervised child
care workers in group homes for
children and adolescents, and
was a President of the Board
of Directors of Interval House,
Canada’s first centre for abused
women and their children.
A gathering to celebrate Mary
Ellen’s life will be held on
November 9, 2019, from 12:00 p.m.
until 3:00 p.m. at the Oakview
Terrace Reception Centre in
Richmond Hill, Ontario. Words of
remembrance will be at 1:00 p.m.

“Geoff”It is with heavy hearts we announce
the passing of our beloved father,
grandfather, great-grandfather and
friend, Geoffrey “Geoff” McKenzie
on October 31, 2019. Geoff was a
loving husband to his wife of 52 years
Margery, and much loved father to
Laurie (Edward), Morag (Gord) and
Sandy. Perhaps his greatest joy were
his 8 grandchildren Andrew (Abbey),
Caitlin (Shawn), Cameron, Fraser
(Dawn), Aaren, Eamon (Becca),
Jessica and James and great-
grandchildren Jack, Harrison and
Ellie. Dad had an extremely happy
and fulfilling life surrounded by his
many friends and loving family.
Born in Trinidad, he moved to
Montreal at 17 to attend McGill
University. On a blind date at
his fraternity house’s grass-skirt
party, he met his future wife
Margery. After marrying, they
moved to Deep River then Port
Hope where their 3 children
were born. After a brief stay
back in Montreal, they moved to
Mississauga to raise their family.
One of Dad’s favourite places in
the world was his cottage - first on
Pigeon Lake in the Kawarthas then
Lake Joseph in Muskoka. He loved
swimming, sailing, gardening and
music - particularly classical. He
was an enormous supporter of
the Toronto Symphony Orchestra-
becoming President of the Board
of Directors and dedicated Patron.
He was a world traveller-visiting
and touring most of the world’s
continents.
Dadenjoyedanextremelysuccessful
career as a Management Consultant
and Managing Partner at Coopers
and Lybrand then Chief Operating
Officer at McCarthy Tétrault. He was
a true leader and mentor to many,
always taking the time to share his
expertise and experience with others.
Dad will be remembered by family
and friends at Turner & Porter
Neweduk Chapel, 1981 Dundas
St. on Wednesday, November
13, 2019 from 12 p.m. until time
of his Celebration of Life at 1
p.m. Reception to follow at the
Mississauga Golf and Country Club.

Moné passed away with his
family by his side. Roop was
born in Pune India. He came to
Toronto in 1965 and graduated
from U of T Engineering in 1969.
Roop began his career at Ontario
Hydro where he worked for many
years. He will be greatly missed
by his many friends and family.
He leaves behind his wife, Lynn,
his children Lesley (Richard),
Melissa (Andrew), Ashok, and his

October 25, 2019Passed away in Scarborough,
Ontario, on October 25, 2019 at the
age of 80 years, after succumbing
to the ravages of lung disease. He
was the devoted husband and best
friend of Margaret Lynne (McLay),
whom he believed was a hero,
a joy to be seen and to be with,
and a great lover and love. Ian
was predeceased by his first wife,
Audrey Stafford. He was the dear
father of Caroline (Denby), Gillian
(Wyett), Oliver and Jonathan. He is
also fondly remembered by nine
grandchildren, who benefitted
from his love of reading and
understood the importance of
avoiding contact with his gouty
toe. Ian was a founding partner
of Fuller Jenks Landau (now
Fuller Landau LLP) Chartered
Accountants; CFO, Caruscan Corp.;
as well as sole practitioner of his
CA practice. He will be sorely
missed for his encyclopedic mind,
encompassing a wide range
of subjects, his wicked sense
of humour, and immeasurable
kindness and generosity. A special

professional care of Ian and his
family for over 31 years, and to

well-loved by his two
brothers and three sisters,
Walter grew up in several
Toronto neighbourhoods.
After high school, he worked
as a tool and die maker to
help support his mother and
siblings. Walter completed a
BA at University of Toronto,
then studied philosophy at
the graduate level at
UniversityofBritishColumbia,
where he also completed an
MA in Urban Planning. He
workedasanurbanplannerin
Regina, Seattle, Vancouver,
and Ottawa. Walter studied
guitar in England, taught
privately, and was a founding
member of the Vancouver
Classical Guitar Society. He
was a skilled handyman -
carpentry, metalwork,
painting, gardening. He
enjoyed many years of
adventuresome hiking with
friendsinthelowermainland,
aswellassolocamping.
In 1958, Walter married
Barbara (née Marriott -
deceased) and they had two
sons, Neil (Tamara, née Flick)
and Gavin. He was blessed
with one grandson, Keegan.
Having parted from Barbara
years earlier, in 1994 he
married Donelda, with whom
he enjoyed many classical
music concerts, plays,
travelling, and cruisesabroad.
This union gave him two
stepchildren, Mark and Niko,
and three step-grandchildren,
Isaak (deceased), Alana, and
Matthew. Walter was a gentle
soul,akindneighbour,loving
father/father-in-law,
thoughtful grandfather and a
devotedpartner.

October 25, 2019Bill passed away peacefully in his
sleep, at age 101. Beloved husband
to Marie for more than 71 years.
Loving father to his three kids;
John (Linda), Gord (Sue), Beverley
(Mike). Proud and loving “Poppa”
to Heather, Kevin, Raymond,
Tammy, Jackie, Evan and Wil. He
will be sorely missed by his many
friends and extended family.
Bill was a decorated Officer in the
Canadian Armed Forces during
WWII, having spent 25 months
as a POW in Stalag Luft 3 where
he played a role in the Great
Escape. Once finally home, he
spent his entire career working
for Canada Life (CL). Bill was a
semi-pro fastball pitcher into
his 40’s, won the All-Ontario
Championship and continued on
with the CL baseball team where
he struck out hundreds more! He
loved to golf and in his 80’s was
known to shoot his age. He spent
over 25 winters in Florida with
Marie, where they made many
friends and enjoyed countless
good times. As Bill got older, his
interest in hockey grew and he
loved to watch his grandchildren
play. Bill was widely known for
his kindness and humour which
often took the form of clever one-
liners. He always enjoyed a glass
of good scotch.
The family would like to extend
their appreciation to the amazing
staff at Donway Place. A service
for Bill will be held on Monday,
November 11th at 2:00 p.m.
in Jubilee United Church, 40
Underhill Dr., Toronto. A private
interment will follow at a later
date. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made to Operation Raise
a Flag at Sunnybrook Hospital.
