Twice a year, like clockwork, for 25 years, a new In Death book arrives in bookstores around
America. So the impending arrival of Golden in Death isn’t a surprise. But it is amazing—Nora
Roberts’ 50th novel in the In Death series.
In 1994, Nora told her editor and her agent about a vision she had for something different than
the books that had established her as one of America’s bestselling novelists. She had a story in
her head—about a female cop—a detective—set in New York City in the future. She already had
a title: Naked in Death. She already knew the main character: Eve Dallas.
Her agent suggested a pseudonym because this novel was so completely different than anything
she had ever written. By the time the first book came out as a mass market original under the
name “J. D. Robb,” Nora was already at work turning this idea into a trilogy.
But with the end of the trilogy, Nora was far from ready to say goodbye to Eve Dallas. So she kept
going. Through each novel Eve and Roarke’s relationship deepened and grew. New characters were
introduced, relationships became more complex, and friendships and family were formed. And of
course, there was always a new, intriguing murder to solve.
In 2001, it was revealed that Nora Roberts and J. D. Robb were one and the same, letting everyone
in on an open secret.
And though Golden in Death marks the 50th novel to feature Eve Dallas, very little time has passed
in her world, while 25 years has passed in ours. Each case takes anywhere from a couple of days
to a couple of weeks—and Eve catches her next case within a few days of closing the last one. So
in In Death time, Eve and Roarke only met three years ago! It’s exciting to think that they are still
basically newlyweds, though we’ve been able to savor their relationship over a longer period of time.
Fifty books in, each new story gives us a fresh angle to discover. You won’t believe what happens next...
