Inassessing his prospects in

a suit contract, declarerusually

starts by counting hislosers. In

most deals this gives him a much

betterpicture of his chances

thanif he tries to count his win-

ners. But this is onlyaruleof

thumb, and declarer should

always be willingtoreadjust

his sights whenthe occasion

demands it.

Considerthis dealwhereWest

leads a club against fourspades.

Afterdummy playslow, East

wins with thekingandreturns

thekingofhearts, taken by

South with the ace. The onlyre-

maininglosers seem to be two

hearts, but whendeclarerplays

the ace of spades andWest shows

out, Southlearnshehasatrump

loseras well.

The 4-0 division apparent-

ly dooms the contract, but if

Southremains focused, he can

stillmake10tricks. He starts by

cashing the ace of diamonds,

thenleads a club to thequeen

andruffs a diamond. A club to

the ace is followed by another

diamondruff.

Declarernext cashes theK-Q

of spades, endingindummy, at

which point he has already won

ninetricks–the A-K-Qof trump,

a heart, a diamond, two clubs

and two diamondruffs inhis

hand.

Whenhenowleads dummy’s

10 of diamonds, East is stymied.
