THE LIFE

Bali

THE PRINT-LOVING FOUNDER OF

LA DOUBLEJ, J.J. MARTIN, EXPLORES

A LUSH JUNGLE PARADISE

THE PL ACE

WHERE TO GO “My experience was magical. I
traveled to the outskirts of Ubud, a great region
that reminds me of Venice Beach [in Los Angeles]
with all of its yoga studios and vegan restaurants.
Later in the trip I went north to lie on the beach at
Puri Bagus Lovina (1). And I loved tree-gazing in
the Ubud Monkey Forest (2); the knotted roots
were like twisted wild animals.”

WHERE TO STAY AND EAT “I stayed on qi gong
master Per van Spall’s compound for a wellness
retreat, but there are lots of beautiful hotels in Ubud,
such as Bambu Indah (3), that I’d like to book next
time. I recommend breakfast at Café Vespa, lunches
at the Elephant, and dinner at Sage. The area has so
many vegetables and grains to enjoy. Italy, where I
live, is not a salad paradise, but Bali definitely is! Be
sure to get a coconut water while you’re there; it’s
served with a straw straight from the green shell.”

WHAT TO DO “The island is packed with temples
everywhere you look, including special ones like
Pura Tirta Empul (4), where you can do purification
ceremonies with water. Most of them don’t allow
you to enter with bare arms or shoulders, so I’d
wear a long-sleeve bathing suit with a sarong on
top of it. At night we went into the outdoor market,
where there are stalls selling cheap food and
clothing. It’s tourist-free and filled with locals eating
right from tiny one-person pots and frying pans. We
paid pennies and ate like kings!”

WHAT TO PACK Bright and breezy dresses, waterproof
flip-flops, and a hands-free bag.
