▽ Enforcing Nazi rule
As Germany’s territories grew, it
relied on the troops of the Waffen
SS to control local populations. In
doing so, they committed a number
of atrocities, notably in Poland.

PAYING FOR THE WAR EFFORT
1942–1945
Occupied countries were forced to make direct
financial contributions to support the German
war effort. Worst affected was France, which
had to pay all the costs of the occupying forces,
amounting to about 80 million Reichmarks per
day. In addition, the Nazi authorities seized
a significant proportion of French food
production, leading to severe rationing and
widespread hunger, especially in the cities.
5 THE FALL OF VICHY FRANCE
NOVEMBER 1942
After the German invasion of northern France in
1940, Hitler allowed the southern half of the
country to remain in collaborationist French hands
under the Vichy regime. The situation changed
with the Allied landings in North Africa in
November 1942, when French commanders
struck deals with the Allies. Losing faith in the
Vichy regime, Hitler extended direct German
control over the whole country.
