THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG
On December 13, 1862, Union General Burnside ordered a series
of attacks on Marye’s Heights, a ridge west of Fredericksburg.
General Longstreet and his Confederate First Corps were positioned
behind a stone wall at the base of the hill, and the Union troops
advancing across open fields became easy targets. This painting by
Frederic Cavada, a Union lieutenant, shows the action from behind
the Federal lines, with troops beginning to fall under fire.
