THE ROCK OF CHICKAMAUGA
After the Union army’s defeat at Chickamauga, General George
Thomas and his men covered the retreat of the rest of the army into
Chattanooga. They held fast on high ground until sunset, earning
Thomas his nickname. Although he lost the battle, his desperate
stand saved the Army of the Cumberland from destruction. This
scene is from a 33-panel panorama, painted by William D. T. Travis
after the war, which tells the story of the Army of the Cumberland.
