GREAT INVENTORS OF THE AGE
This pantheon of American inventors was painted by Christian
Schussele in 1862 under the title Men of Progress. Several were
responsible for technological advances that changed the nature of
warfare. Samuel Colt, the gun manufacturer, stands third from the
left, John Ericsson, designer of the ironclad Monitor, is to the right of
the pillar in the center, while the dominant figure, seated with a mane
of white hair, is Samuel Morse, inventor of the electric telegraph.
