MATHEW BRADY AT GETTYSBURG
The photographer Mathew Brady and his team reached Gettysburg
some days after the end of the fighting, by which time the dead
had been buried. Brady chose to produce a series of evocative
shots of sites that had witnessed significant or tragic episodes in the
battle. In this photograph Brady himself is gazing across a field to
the woods where, early on the first day of the battle, General John
F. Reynolds had been killed by a Confederate sniper.
