PLANNING THE END OF THE WAR
On March 28, 1865, President Lincoln met with his generals (from
left) William T. Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant, and Rear Admiral
David D. Porter on the River Queen, Grant’s floating headquarters
at City Point, Virginia. The talks covered the strategy for ending the
war, as well as the terms of surrender. The artist George P. A. Healy
immortalized the occasion in his painting, The Peacemakers, and
was indebted to his friend Sherman for its authenticity of detail.
