Johnson’s Island Prisoner of War Depot
A memorial for those who were buried on Johnson’s
Island, the Confederate Soldier Statue was dedicated
on June 8, 1910. It is the largest monument in the
island’s cemetery.


NEW MEXICO


Fort Craig National Historic Site
Established in 1854, this fort situated in
the Rio Grande Valley played a critical role
in Indian campaigns during the Civil War.
On February 21, Confederate General H. H.
Sibley engaged Union troops led by Colonel
E. R. S. Canby at Valverde Crossing—the
largest Civil War battle in the Southwest.

Pecos National Historical Park
On March 26–28, 1862, the Battle of
Glorieta Pass, known as “the Gettysburg
of the West,” was fought within what is
now Pecos National Historic Park. This
was the decisive battle in New Mexico,
and it was here that Union forces were
able to turn back the Southern troops.

General Grant National Memorial
Overlooking the Hudson River is the final
resting place of Ulysses S. Grant and his
wife. It is the largest tomb in North
America. The site, generally known as
Grant’s Tomb, also serves as a memorial
to Grant’s life and accomplishments.

Confederate States Military
Prison Site and Salisbury
National Cemetery
A 16-acre (6.5ha) prison compound with
wooden stockades and a nearby burial
site. After prisoner exchanges stopped
in August of 1864, the facility swelled,
housing over 10,000 troops and
necessitating a mass grave system which
included 18 trenches spanning 240ft (73m)
each. Union general George Stoneman
set fire to the prison in April, 1865.

Sherman House Museum
The birthplace of General William
Tecumseh Sherman has been restored
to its 19th-century appearance. The
museum includes family memorabilia,
a re-creation of General Sherman’s
Civil War field tent, a sound and light
presentation, and other Civil War artifacts.
