The Rise of the Republican Party
The Republican Party is founded to oppose the
extension of slavery. Quickly becomes a power
on the national stage.

The Raid at Harpers Ferry
Abolitionist John Brown’s raid on a federal
armory in Virginia. U.S. Army ends the raid and
captures Brown and his men. Brown executed.

The Election of 1860
The Democrats are divided. Four-way contest in
the race for president. Abraham Lincoln is
elected, but fails to win any states in the South.
