YOUNG RECRUITS JOIN THEIR SHIP
The USS Wabash leaving New York for the Seat of War, painted by
Edward Moran in 1861, captures the enthusiasm of newly joined up
volunteers at the beginning of the war as they are shipped out to
the waiting Wabash. A screw frigate launched in 1855, the Wabash
had seen action before the war and was recommissioned at the
outbreak of war to serve as flagship of the Atlantic Blockading
Squadron under Rear Admiral Silas H. Stringham.
