The Greek Sale
Bonhams London, November 13
An eclectic mix of 19th- and 20th-
century Greek works are collated into
this Bonhams sale, with hardboard and
wooden constructions by Alexis
Akrithakis, gold leaf on canvas by
Spyros Vassiliou, and a seductive
portrait by Théodore Jacques Ralli
(“Young girl in the hamam”, estimate
£40,000-£60,000). One of the
auction’s standout works is Christos
Bokoros’ 1991 “Eggs” series, which is
estimated to sell for £50,000-£70,000.

The Collector
Christie’s London, November 13-14
In collaboration with interior designer
Rita Konig, this two-day sale
encompasses decorative arts and
furniture spanning several centuries.
Victorian and Regency oak interiors
are among the pieces being sold on day
one, including an ebony-inlaid dressing
table attributed to George Bullock
(estimate £3,000-£5,000). Day two
features 19th-century sculpture and
ceramics: items include a marble bust
by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse
(estimate £5,000-£8,000).

20th Century & Contemporary Art
Phillips New York, November 14
One of the main stars of this auction is
Norman Rockwell’s “Before the Shot”,
with an estimated hammer price of
$2.5m-$4.5m. Other prominent artists
include Yoshimoto Nara, Jean-Michel
Basquiat and Jeff Koons, whose “Hulk
(Friends)” — a playful polychromed
bronze inspired by an inflatable of the
comic book character — is estimated at
$3m-$5m. American artist Tschabalala
Self also features with a mixed-media
work (linen, fabric, paper, oil) “Mista &
Mrs”, expected to fetch between
$120,000-$180,000.

Contemporary Curated
Sotheby’s London, November 19
Guest curators Alia Al-Senussi
(entrepreneur) and Elisa Sednaoui
Dellal (academic), both prominent
members of the contemporary art
world, have handpicked a personal edit
of works by influential artists such as
Damien Hirst, Olafur Eliasson, Antony
Gormley, Manolo Valdés and Georg
Baselitz, including the latter’s “Songs in
the suitcase” (estimate £100,000-
£150,000). George Condo’s whimsical
“Butcher’s wife” (estimate £350,000-
£450,000) is a highlight.

Modern British and Irish Art
Bonhams London, November 20
Paintings capturing wartime, namely
troops in the fields, appear in this lot,
rendering military action sedate and

even peaceful — these include Paul
Nash’s “Leaving the Trenches”
(estimate £50,000-£70,000) and
Gilbert Spencer’s “Troops in the
Countryside” (estimate £12,000-
£18,000). There are natural,
picturesque landscapes depicted
by Algernon Cecil Newton and
Paul Henry.

19th Century European Paintings
Bonhams New York, November 20
A standout here is Louis Eugène
Ginain’s “manoeuvres of the French
army at Camp de Chalons” (estimate
$15,000-$20,000). Highlights from
several French artists include Louis
Emile Pinel De Grandcamp, Henri
Pierre Picou and Théodore Rousseau.
A further notable work is a portrait
titled “Girl in harvest field” by
American Daniel Ridgway Knight
(estimate $70,000-$100,000).

Latin American Art
Christie’s New York, November 20-21
Frida Kahlo’s two paintings “The
Flower Basket” and “Portrait of a Lady
in White” lead Christie’s New York sale,
both with an estimated price tag of
$3m-$5m. Sculptural works will go on
sale, including pieces by Francisco
Zúñiga and the rotund bronzes of
Fernando Botero, such as his “Seated
Woman” (estimate $200,000-
$300,000). Of Botero’s paintings,
“Tablao Flamenco” is an auction
highlight (estimate $1.5m-$2m). Works
by Diego Rivera and Tomás Sánchez
also feature.

Important Russian Art
Christie’s London, November 25
From the Peredvizhniki, Russian
Avant-Garde and Nonconformist,
Christie’s auction spans a range of key
movements. Highlights include a
femme fatale portrait by Nicolai Fechin
(“The Manicure. Portrait of
Mademoiselle Girmond”, estimate
$2.5m-$3.8m) and Nicholas Roerich’s
“The Call of the Sun” (estimate $2m-
$2.5m). Roerich’s “St Mercurius of
Smolensk” (estimate $260,000-
$390,000) is also included, and
considered one of his most important
works dedicated to Russian saints ever
to appear at auction.

Old Masters
Sotheby’s London, December 4
This evening sale includes a number of
rediscoveries, including a finished
study of an old man in the character of
a beggar by Josephy Wright of Derby
and an autographed version of
Giovanni Bellini’s “Christ carrying the
Cross”. Luis Melendez’s “Still life with a
plate of apricots, cherries, bread, wine
cooler and receptacles” leads the sale
(estimate £600,000-£800,000),
which is particularly strong on
Italian and Spanish 16th- and
17th-century paintings by
Francesco Botticini, Luis
de Morales and Salvator
Rosa, among others.

art in New York (Gagosian, MoMA
PS1), this inaugural auction features
desert paintings from the collections of
Thomas Vroom, Gabrielle Pizzi and
Fiona Brockhoff. The sale relocates
from London to New York to be the
