Philip Sindenwith the eighth annual Women of the Year Awards that I’ve
overseen during my tenure. I came here in the knowledge that
the legacy of Bazaar is far greater than any single one of its
editors; for this is a title built on more than 150 years of
visionary leadership. Generations of talented women have
been at the heart of Bazaar’s success since its launch in 1867
(though men have played a vital role, too; one only needs to
remember the extraordinary achievements of Alexey
Brodovitch, the art director from 1934 to 1958, and of the
photographers he discovered, most notably Richard Avedon).
But I hope that in my time, I have strengthened the
com mitment to stor y telling – in fa shion, a r t, literat ure a nd
travel – along with a profound belief in sisterhood.
My ow n a lleg ia nce to t hese va lues goes back to my
childhood; to the lovingly crafted magazines and books I made
with my sister Ruth, which we handwrote, illustrated and
sewed together. Ruth died far too young – at the age of 33,This is my final issue as editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar,
